Discover beauty, mystery and history along the 54 kilometre Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk linking the species-rich, Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area of Lamington and Springbrook plateaus via the scenic Numinbah Valley. Walk through the ancient volcanic landscape of the Tweed Volcano, which is still being eroded by rushing streams and plummeting waterfalls, through lush rainforest with relicts of Gondwana flora and fauna. Choose to stroll a short section over a few hours, join a guided tour or for the more adventurous you can hike the full trail. The Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk links Green Mountains (Lamington National Park) to the Springbrook Plateau, via Binna Burra and the Numinbah Valley. The walk offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences: where else in Queensland can you walk along the rim of an ancient volcano? As you meander through the ancient rainforests you'll view stunning vistas from numerous lookouts, unique wildlife and splashing waterfalls.

Lying close to shore off Fingal Head in the Pacific Ocean, Cook Island is an accessible and appealing dive site on the Gold Coast. Hard and soft corals cover the bottom in some areas; in others boulders form walls and caves descending to the sandy sea floor. You'll find an interesting mix of reef and pelagic fish; pufferfish, gropers, surgeonfish, anemonefish, leatherjackets, parrotfish, trevally, bullseyes and sweetlips. Macro-photographers will find plenty of subjects. Stingrays, turtles, wobbegongs and blind sharks, Leopard sharks abound in summer.

Palm Beach Reef on the Gold Coast is a large reef with sections of rocky outcrops, and several large bommies with a variety of soft corals and sponges. The top of the reef rises to just five metres below the surface. Marine Life is abundant with stingrays and the odd bronze whaler or hammerhead seen, and in summer, Wobbegongs and leopard sharks. Blue wrasse, parrotfish, painted wrasse and a variety of reef fish, with large schools are the norm.

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area protects more than 1,200 hectares of wetland, Eucalypt forest, salt marsh and mangrove swamp habitat. Lake Coombabah and its estuarine system are important coastal wetlands and migratory water bird habitats. There are some great walking trails at Coombabah Lakelands.
