The Islander Estate Vineyard is located in the heart of Kangaroo Island, west of Kingscote on the gentle slopes of Kohinoor Hills. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia. Kangaroo Island offers near perfect growing conditions of wine grapes, including a cool, semi dry climate that allows slow ripening, significant factors in producing The Islander Estate Wines. The idea of making wine on Kangaroo Island occurred to Jacques Lurton in 1997, when he visited the island on a holiday. He fell in love with its natural beauty, saw few planted vines but recognised its considerable potential. A modern 70 tonne winery respecting the classic Australian style has been erected on site. The equipment has mainly been brought from France with sorting tables to select the best of the grapes. After destemming the fruit, open concrete fermenters are used for fermentation and large wooden vats for ageing. Islander Estate is open daily for private tours and tastings. Bookings are required.

In an era before 240 volt power, good roads and telephones, the innovation and humour shown by this generation is a delight. The hall was built by the Returned Services League and dedicated as a memorial to Soldier Settlement, the building now contains memorabilia, photographs and stories relating to the development of Parndana and surrounding districts. The museum tells of how the land was cleared and improved for farming. The stories tell of their experiences, hardships, fellowship and humour that saw them successfully reshape their lives and build a community to be proud of.
