Heide Museum of Modern Art, or Heide as it is affectionately known, began life in 1935 as the Melbourne home of John and Sunday Reed and has evolved into one of the most important cultural institutions in Australia. For tens of thousands of visitors each year, Heide offers an inspiring, educational and thought-provoking experience of modern and contemporary art, architecture and landscape. Located just 20 minutes from the CBD, Heide boasts 15 acres of beautiful landscape - including three dedicated exhibition spaces; Heide I, Heide II and Heide III, historic kitchen gardens, a sculpture park and the Heide Store. The Immigration Museum explores the stories of real people from all over the world who have migrated to Victoria. Located in the Old Customs House in the heart of the city, the museum re-creates the real-life stories of coming to Australia with a rich mix of moving images, personal and community voices, memories and memorabilia. From the reasons for making the journey, to the moment of arrival in a new country, and the impact on indigenous communities, these stories are sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but always engaging. The result is a thought-provoking and moving experience. The Immigration Museum is also the starting point for the Golden Mile Heritage Trail, an historic walk that takes in nearly 80 buildings and attractions through the city. The award winning National Opal Collection showroom is amongst Australia's most fascinating tourist attractions. Here you will discover the incredible link between the opal and the dinosaur. Part museum, part sales showroom, it not only has a huge array of opals and jewellery for sale, but also shows how opals came to be formed over millions of years and how they are mined today. As you enter you are surrounded by dioramas of Australia's outback and then taken through time from the dinosaur age to modern day opal production. Exhibits show how the bones of prehistoric creatures can become opalised. The National Opal Collection also provides educational programs for pre-arranged groups. These programs include a viewing of a 7-minute DVD production, The Opal Story, which explains the different types of opal and how and where they are mined. The film is available in English, Japanese, Mandarin, German, French and English with Simplified Chinese subtitles. Multi-lingual staff are also on hand to provide information on opal and its formation. The DVD is viewed in a 50-seat auditorium.
