Trace a story as old as the earth in South Australia’s largest mountain range. The majestic, timeworn Flinders Ranges sprawl across three national parks and stretch more than 430km from Crystal Brook to Lake Callabonna. Climb Mt Remarkable in the southern Flinders Ranges and the huge, natural amphitheatre of Wilpena Pound in the centre. In the arid north, there's a wilderness sanctuary and an observatory to explore. Find yourself in this ancient outback story, where adventure, tranquility and spirituality co-exist.

Four things to do in the Flinders Ranges

1. Find your own adventure

Trek to the rim of Wilpena Pound or soar over it on a scenic flight. From the sky it looks like a lost world where dinosaurs still roam. In the southern Flinders Ranges, you can trek through Wirrabara and Bundaleer forests or do some serious mountain biking. Hike to the top of Mount Remarkable or ride a camel to a candlelight dinner at Quorn. Four wheel on tracks from Melrose to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the rugged north. Scale the Gammon Ranges or stare into space from one of Arkaroola’s three observatories.

2. Uncover stories as old as the earth

Trace 600 million years of evolution on the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail, where the unique fossils have refined the earth's timeline. See Aboriginal art at Arkaroo Rock and Yourambulla Caves and other paintings and carvings at Chambers Gorge. Learn about the Dreamtime story of creation on a two-day self-drive Aboriginal Dreaming Trail. In Vulkathunha–Gammon Ranges National Park, you can see rock art, taste bush tucker and visit sacred sites with an Adnyamathana guide. Then peek into the area’s pastoral past on a walk through sprawling Wilpena Station, where Aboriginal and European histories meet.

3. Get up close to nature

Walk to the rim of Wilpena Pound past a huge diversity of native plants.  Spot rare yellow-footed rock wallabies at Brachina Gorge and the occasional kangaroo hopping across Arkaroola’s red earth.  Meet resident echidnas and euros and hear the song of more than 100 bird species.  Wind through caves, gorges and forests in the southern Flinders Ranges and past Lake Frome’s shimmering saltpan in the north. Camp beneath the stars and visit the wildlife havens of Italowie and Weetootla gorges in Vulkathunha–Gammon Ranges National Park.

4. Lose yourself on epic journeys

Hike all the way from Parachilna Gorge to the beaches of Fleurieu Peninsula on the 1,200km Heysen Trail. Or cycle the 900km Mawson Trail from the Adelaide Hills to the Flinders Ranges town of Blinman. Ride the Pichi Richi Railway from Quorn to Port Augusta. Help move hundreds of cattle across the Flinders Ranges and outback on the biennial Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive.
