Hayman Island
While this island's private plunge pools and ocean massages might lure you to the Whitsundays, it's the surrounding reef landscape that will make you want to stay. After a morning stroll on the beach, hop aboard a seaplane for a champagne picnic on Whitehaven Beach: the whitest sand beach in the Pacific. Don't miss: kayaking or sailing the neighboring island's coves and channels.
Tasmania
Once known as Van Diemen's Land, Australia's southernmost island is still as rugged and wild as it was when first spotted by Abel Tasman in 1642. Now, it's a place where inspiration is best found in nature. From coastal walks to spotting Tasmanian Devils, this island's unique heritage and craggy landscapes are best explored on foot. Don't miss: the view over Freycinet's Wineglass Bay or cruising alongside whales and dolphins on a Bruny Island eco adventure.
Kangaroo Island
At your doorstep from Southern Ocean Lodge, trek along Kangaroo Island's rocky southern shore or join a guide to spot kangaroos, wallabies, and koalas. Keep in mind Australia's Galapagos boasts of more than abundant wildlife -- its dramatic landscapes are equally as exclusive. The distant screeches of glossy black cockatoos, barks of sea lions, and crashing waves will constantly remind you that there's nothing like Australia.
Heron Island
This Great Barrier Reef Island resort caters to the tastes of both humans and local critters equally. Awarded an Advanced Eco- Certification, Heron is home to a research station where guests can take part in fostering the island's marine ecosystem. During most seasons, combine a sunset stroll on the beach with turtle spotting. During the day, make friends with the bird and marine wildlife as you hang out with them along the shore.
Lizard Island
Twenty four white sand beaches serve as either a personal paradise or your gateway to adventure. This northernmost Great Barrier Reef resort is close to the tropics of Cairns and an easy jump off point to world class diving at The Cod Hole. After an afternoon of deep sea fishing or snorkeling, freshen up in time for a gourmet dinner or sunset drinks from your oceanfront villa.
Fraser Island
An easy trek from Brisbane, and accessible by seaplane or ferry, Fraser Island's coastal waterways are also seasonal highways for migrating whales. The world’s largest sand island is home to freshwater lakes, towering rainforests and elusive dingoes. 4WD down Seventy Five Mile Beach, cool off in natural lazy rivers, and sand board the dunes. Whether you camp alongside the beach or kick back at an eco resort, Fraser Island offers a classic take on Australian adventure.
