Freycinet Vineyards Pty Ltd

Tasman Highway, North - Northeast,
Bicheno, Tasmania 7215

Freycinet Vineyard is a family-run vineyard and winery overlooking Tasmania's famed Freycinet National Park. Established in 1980 by Geoff and Susie Bull, the east coast site was selected for its ideal microclimate - long sunshine hours and lean soils that encourage vines to focus on fruit not foliage. The family tradition of winemaking is continued by their daughter Lindy and her husband Claudio Rodenti. You will observe the traditional techniques of barrel fermentation and maturation. Tight-grain French oak casks are used and minimal intervention ensures the wines retain their maximum colour and flavour. You can sample some of the vineyard's handcrafted wines, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling/Schonburger, cabernet sauvignon and the Rodenti sparkling, against the spectacular backdrop of the Freycinet Peninsula. The vineyard is open to the public for tastings seven days a week, 364 days a year. There are no tours of the vineyard. Freycinet Vineyard is located approximately 15 minutes' drive (18 kilometres/11 miles) south of Bicheno on Tasmania's east coast. Bicheno is just over two-hours' drive from Launceston.

Flinders and Freycinet Lookout

Intersection of Farrel and Elliot Street, Eyre Peninsula,
Whyalla, South Australia 5600

In 1802 Matthew Flinders was the first European to navigate and chart this unknown coast of South Australia, solving the centuries old mystery as to whether Australia was one continent or two. Ten months later, in January 1803, Louis-Claude de Freycinet navigated and charted the isolated coast for the Baudin expedition. He and his crew spent a night at sea, off what was to become Whyalla, and were impressed by the local scenery. In September 2001, as part of the Encounter 2002 project to recognise French exploration, the two explorers were commemorated at the lookout by contemporary sculptures and the area was renamed the Flinders and Freycinet Lookout. The lookout offers magnificent views of the upper Spencer Gulf, Southern Flinders Ranges and Middleback Range in the west.

Mayfield Bay Coastal Reserve is a conservation area south of Swansea on Tasmania's east coast and a great spot to break your journey along the coast, unpack a picnic and get out your camera. Mayfield Bay's sandy beach and coastal area offers good camping, fishing, swimming, surfing and diving, as well as wonderful views across Great Oyster Bay to Freycinet Peninsula. The reserve has shady trees and toilet facilities but you'll need to bring your own drinking water and camping gear. A little further north from Mayfield Bay is the convict-built Spiky Bridge. This unusual looking bridge was built in the 1840s by a convict road gang. The bridge was built from local fieldstone with stones placed vertically along the parapet, giving the bridge its spiky appearance. It's been claimed that the spikes were designed to prevent cattle falling over the sides. There are also interpretation signs with information about the nearby Rocky Hills Probation Outstation convict ruins. The reserve is a 15-minute drive from Swansea and one-and-a-half-hour drive from Hobart.
