Lake Hillier

Middle Island, Recherche Archipelago Nature Reserve, ESPERANCE - BAY OF ISLES,
Cape Arid, Western Australia 6452

Picture a lake of the brightest bubblegum-pink sitting beside the deepest blue ocean. Lake Hillier is one of the extraordinary sights you'll see flying or cruising through the pristine wilderness of the Recherche Archipelago. Located on Middle Island, the largest of the Recherche islands (11 kilometres from the coast of Cape Arid National Park), this striking phenomenon can be accessed by chartering a plane or boat with nearby tour operators in Esperance. The lake is separated from the Southern Ocean by just a thin strip of sand and it's widely believed that the water's permanent strawberry milkshake colour is due to the extremely high level of salinity. This discovery was made as early as 1802, when Matthew Flinders led an expedition to the islands and collected a sample from the lake, but there has been no definitive proof that salt is the source of its unique hue. Measuring just 600 metres wide and shaped like a footprint, this relatively small feature has a huge impact when viewed from a scenic flight or cruise, and the untouched islands of the Recherche Archipelago create a stunning backdrop, rich in marine life.

Jacques Barrett: The Confident Profiler

180 Hamersley Road, PERTH,
Perth, Western Australia 6050

A Perth Comedy Festival event. After 10 years of bartending and 12 years of stand up (some overlap) Jacques has weaponised his ability to sum people up on sight. His policy? Always judge a book by its cover; that's the whole point of a cover. Everyone has decent intuition when they meet new people but Jacques wants to go deeper. Teaching you how to interpret body language, body art and body odour. Sharpen your ability to identify potentially dangerous stalkers, strangers, and people from Queensland. And soften the edges of your online profiles so prospective employers and life-partners don't notice your faults until it's too late. In just 60 minutes Jacques will show you how to transcend the stigma of being "judgmental" and become The Confident Profiler.

Matt Okine: The Other Guy

825 Hay Street, PERTH,
Perth, Western Australia 6000

A Perth Comedy Festival event. While waiting to see if he's about to become a dad, Matt Okine has a lot of thinking to do. After years of stealing his flatmates shampoo, and eating meals that consist entirely of food samples given out at the supermarket, Matt's is now stinking rich. And it's awesome. But his nine-year relationship has ended out of the blue, and Matt can't help but wonder why? Where did it all go wrong? How much do babies cost? And why do racists always catch the bus? This is a show about fancy bread, arguing on aeroplanes, and wishing you were the guy who washes windows at traffic lights. It's a love story, with a sad ending. It's the realest show Matt's ever done, and you definitely don't want to miss it.

Em Rusciano: The Motherload

174-176 William Street, PERTH,
Perth, Western Australia 6000

A Perth Comedy Festival event. Imagine all the love of a Celine power ballad, and all the snot and isolation of an Ebola outbreak. This show's kinda like that clip Beyonce did with Blue Ivy, only with more C-bombs, more references to extreme toilet paper usage, and no attempt whatsoever to hide marital difficulties. From parenting in the 80's to her hatred of the Disney Musical Frozen, The Motherload will leave no stone unturned, no relationship unexamined, no swear word unsweared. Oh and there will be a John Farnham sing-along. By God there will be John Farnham sing-a-long. Accompanied by her long suffering Father Vincie, Em will rip through your heart like herpes at a blue light disco. If you've had a Mother, then this show is for you.

Adrienne Truscott: Asking For It

Perth, Western Australia 6000

A Perth Comedy Festival event. Adrienne Truscott's Asking For it: A one lady rape about comedy starring her p***y and little else. The sell out hit of the Sydney Festival returns for two nights only. Adrienne Truscott, one-half of the infamous Wau Wau Sisters, dressed only from the waist up and ankles down, undoes and does in the rules and rhetoric about rape, comedy and the awkward laughs in between. With commentary from George Carlin, Louis C. K. and Robert De Niro, ducks, whistles and enough gin and tonics to get a girl in trouble, she lets her p***y do the talking. Set to pop music. Can you make jokes about rape? She plans to, all night long. Even if you tell her to stop. Winner - 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Foster's Panel Prize. Winner - 2013 Malcolm Hardee Comic Originality.

Daniel Kitson: Polyphony

180 Hamersley Road, PERTH,
Perth, Western Australia 6008

A Perth Comedy Festival event. Polyphony. By Daniel Kitson. Daniel Kitson has written a play. It has a pretty epic scope, a relatively grand vision and somewhere in the region of twenty characters. It is, basically, a real humdinger. Unfortunately though, it is a script so ambitious, so demanding, so exquisitely detailed that handing an actor this text and putting them in front of an audience is like handing a toddler a pint of coffee and putting them in front of a zipwire. It won't end well. So instead, he has pre-recorded each actor, in isolation, onto a separate tape. Leaving a litany of individual voices - each of them perfect, captured on a tape that will, when played back in precise unison, form a glorious theatrical polyphony. The play is perfect. The tapes are perfect. He just needs enough people to press play. That's all.

A Perth Comedy Festival event. Pablo Francisco returns to Australia with a brand new show following his sold-out tours in 2009, 2010 and 2011. When Pablo Francisco hits the stage, he brings his audiences to their feet with laughter and applause. He weaves together his arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. His unmatched take on all things pop culture has taken him into the ranks of the most popular touring comedians worldwide, leaving his audiences struggling to catch their breath. Fans around the globe have been captivated by his brilliantly accurate, off the wall sound effects and intensely animated delivery. The king of impersonations, Pablo's unbelievable ability to physically morph himself into Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael J. Fox, Jackie Chan and of course Don Fontaine (aka the movie voice over guy) plus many others, is mesmerising.
