Bicheno Penguin Tours takes you to see fairy penguins at dusk on Tasmania’s east coast. The nightly evening tours offer a rare and thrilling chance to visit a private rookery. You can watch the fairy penguins (also known as the little penguin) emerge from the ocean and head for their homes. Established by Bicheno locals to protect the penguin population, the tour lets you get close to the penguins without disturbing their nightly journey. Bicheno’s Glass Bottom Boat operates from Bicheno, on Tasmania's east coast from September through April. The cool temperate waters offer excellent viewing of the creatures that live there and the luxuriant and rarely seen plant life is a spectacle itself. Your guide has many years of experience and can offer comprehensive and knowledgeable interpretation. Every day is different and the effect of the East Australian current is at times dramatic with many different life forms travelling in it. Freycinet Air operates scenic flights over the east coast from Friendly Beaches, near Coles Bay. The company has been operating since 1997 and offers scenic flights in their Cessna 172s, which have a maximum capacity of three passengers. Tasmania's east coast is a is one of the most stunning in Australia. From the islands of Maria and Schouten to the Freycinet Peninsula with its pink granite mountains, you fly over long stretches of unspoilt ocean beaches and rugged headlands; a highlight is an aerial view of Wine Glass Bay. Freycinet Air also operates scenic flights to Maria Island, and the historical settlement of Darlington. Freycinet Air flies from Friendly Beaches Airfield, located 18 kilometres north of Coles Bay. Turn off the Swansea - Bicheno road (Highway A3) into Coles Bay Road (C302) and drive nine kilometres towards Coles Bay before turning left at the Friendly Beaches sign. Part of The Great Walks of Tasmania, Freycinet Experience Walk is a guided trek along the Freycinet Peninsula on Tasmania’s east coast. The four-day walk involves both coastal and mountain walking. The Freycinet Experience Walk takes you along deserted beaches, up pink granite Mount Graham and through the heart of the rich native heathlands of the Freycinet National Park, including Wineglass Bay. Each evening you return to the award-winning and environmentally sensitive Friendly Beaches Lodge for an evening meal featuring local produce and regional wines. You have the added luxury of a hot shower before sleeping in a comfortable bed. The Walk covers between 30 and 37 kilometres depending on which walking option you choose. Regardless of your route choice you will travel from the southern to the north tip of the Freycinet Peninsula in a continuous journey. You also do not have to carry a heavy backpack. No one else except fellow walkers and the four staff will be at the Friendly Beaches Lodge – making it a special place to truly unwind.
