Flemington Racecourse (originally called Melbourne Racecourse) was first used as a racecourse in 1840 when the town of Melbourne was just five years old, making it the oldest metropolitan racecourse in Australia. With views of the Melbourne city skyline, this National Heritage listed site also boasts the largest public rose garden in the Southern Hemisphere.
Flemington Racecourse has been famous around the world as the home of the Melbourne Cup since it was first run in 1861. Today, the Melbourne Cup Carnival is a festival of horse racing, fashion and fun that starts in September and runs through until mid-November.
Melbourne Cup Day, on the first Tuesday in November, has been a public holiday for the city of Melbourne since the mid-1870s, and is celebrated around the country. The racecourse has a crowd capacity of more than 120,000, but each year around 400,000 enthusiasts fill its car parks and open spaces on Melbourne Cup Day. Spring Carnival race days such as Derby Day and Oaks Day are also held at Flemington Racecourse. Flemington hosts 23 race meetings throughout the year.

Flemington is not only a premier racecourse; it is also a world-class entertainment venue. Throughout the year, numerous events are held here, including music festivals and children's events. The Melbourne Showgrounds are next door to Flemington Racecourse. The Royal Melbourne Show is held here in September.
Every Sunday morning the Flemington Farmers Markets are held near the Flemington Racecourse providing an opportunity to sample and buy fresh food produce from Victoria's regional growers.
Flemington is located 6km northwest of the Melbourne city centre. There are many ways you can travel to Flemington including trains, trams, buses, taxis and limousines. Catch a train from Flinders Street or Southern Cross station to Flemington and enjoy the colourful atmosphere of the ride on race days.
You can also cycle the Maribyrnong River Trail from Southbank along the Yarra River which winds past Flemington Racecourse. Take a break at Pipemakers Park to explore the historic buildings, wetlands and the Living Museum of the West. Continuing through native bushland and attractive river reserves, the trail passes under the towering bridges of the Melbourne-Sydney rail line to Brimbank Park, the ideal setting for a picnic under the giant gum trees.
