Breweries in Queensland worth the trip

Queensland Breweries Worth the Trip

Name one thing about warm breeze, relentless sunshine and clear skies that doesn’t make you want to have a cheeky bev. That’s right, you can’t.

Queensland is littered with vibey breweries perfect for satiating these kinds of summer cravings. Think beer gardens, fresh food and beer tastings run by the best in the industry. Why not fill in some of your blank days on the East Coast with a brewery visit?

With the help of our friends at BIG4, we’ve sussed some rippers especially for your tasting pleasure.

Fortitude Brewing Co, North Tamborine

Plonk yourself in the stunning Gold Coast hinterland, about an hour drive south of Brisbane, and try the diverse range this brewery offers up. Our picks are Fortitude and Noisy Minor; their extreme differences will keep you entertained, that’s for sure.

Burleigh Brewing Co, Burleigh Heads

This place is also only an hour drive south of Brissie, and it comes with twenty-plus taps, live music, and a communal space that pushes you into socialising. It’s all going on at this Gold Coast brewery. We bet you’ll like a lot of their brews, but our favourite is the pale ale called ‘28’.

While you’re at it: co-founded by surfer Mick Fanning, the Balter Brewing at Currumbin is a great drive-by too. Just make sure you time it right as they are only open Fridays from 3pm and weekends from 1pm.

Bargara Brewing Company, Bundaberg

With working tanks almost within arm’s reach, a visit to this brewhouse will get you an authentic craft beer experience. It’s not flash, but mid-roadtrip, neither are you. Jks. This place keeps it real with more money on atmos than anything else. Get the taste buds dancing by sampling the Rusty Roo red ale. It’s a 4.5 hour drive north, but you can also get a flight there from Brisbane.

Bacchus Brewing, Capalaba

These guys offer everything from bespoke crowd-faves to one-off experiments – producing up to 3 new beers every damn WEEK. Pop into this beauty to sample anything you want from the 17 different taps on offer, and make sure you plan on a carb day, because these guys make fresh pizzas from Friday to Sunday. Plus, this is only a quick 30 minute drive to Brisbane. Easy-peasey, m8.

Barrier Reef Brewing, Stratford

Started by a veterinary-surgeon-cum-beer-maker, this place cares equally about the environment and craft beer - so at least we know their priorities are in the right place! All their beers are naturally hand brewed, making the flaves unique AF. Plus, they actively support the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, which is pretty damn cute. Now, while this place is technically classified at Queensland, it will take you a hell of a lot longer to get here from Brisbane (11.5 hours south) than Sydney (around 3 hours west) by car. Rookie mistake, but don’t worry, we gotchu.

Hemingways Brewery, Port Douglas

Pop into this waterfront brewery for a craft beer and poof! All your problems won’t exist anymore. (Until, of course, you go home.) These guys pride themselves on sourcing from local malts and hops and, of course, a view of the Mossman Gorge so impressive you’ll want to flirt with the owner a little bit. Given The Hemingways is in Far North Queensland, we recommend flying there from Brissie since driving will take you around 20 hours. Flights, on the other hand, will take you 2.

While you’re at it: check out Townsville Brewery, and make sure you order the Townsville Bitter.
