What to expect

The world's best chefs and famous food lovers agree: the Margaret River Gourmet Escape is truly a unique experience.

In previous years, the international and local line up of food and wine talent has included the likes of Heston Blumenthal, Rick Stein, Alex Atala, Tetsuya Wakuda and Matt Stone. As many as 45 culinary stars have turned up to wow more than 15,000 food lovers, with a mind-blowing eight Michelin stars and more than 20 Chefs Hats between them – including three restaurants in the world’s top 50.

The culinary hub of the weekend is the Gourmet Village at Leeuwin Estate, where more than 60 wineries, 17 restaurants and 100 producers showcase their wares. Events include masterclasses, wine tastings, intimate Q&As with experts and chefs and cooking demonstrations.

A unique event in 2013 was The Forager, set in the forest and hosted by Wardandi man Josh Whiteland and Jock Zonfrillo. Privileged diners enjoyed a rare menu featuring native ingredients. International and Australian talent including Sat Bains, Alex Atala, Miles Irving, Al Brown and Darren Robertson, all of whom are passionate about using native and locally sourced ingredients, shared stories and showcased the edible plant and animal species unique to the West Australian bush.

Things you shouldn't miss

There are plenty of opportunities to meet and mingle with TV’s most popular celebrity chefs. In past years, 'The Godfather' of seafood, Rick Stein, has held Catch of the Day sessions sharing his tips for cooking the perfect seafood dish, while gourmet beach BBQs were cooked by chefs including George Calombaris, Guillaume Brahimi and Matt Stone.

However, note that it pays to book early: while the Gourmet Village event hub can cater for more than 5,000 people, many of the satellite events such as the Beach BBQ and collaboration dinners are intimate events, and sell out fast.
