The Best Places to Enjoy Snow in Australia

Ski, hike, snowshoe and feast your way through the Australian snow this winter.

Winter in Australia is unique. While the sun shines on beaches in the north, it’s snow time down south. New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania are full of activities and adventures while snow is in abundance. It’s the perfect time to slide down the slopes, take a walk through the pristine wilderness and revel in the festivities that only a snowy winter brings.

The snow season has officially started at ski resorts across New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. If you’re keen to hit the slopes in New South Wales, be sure to check out ThredboPerisherJindabyneAlpine WayCharlotte PassMt Selwyn as well as Canberra.

In Victoria, head to Mt BullerMt StirlingMt HothamFalls CreekLake MountainMt Baw Baw and Dinner Plain. Further south in Tasmania are the ski areas of Ben Lomond and Mt Mawson.  All resorts offer a range of accommodation options including, self-contained apartments, hotels, lodges and bed and breakfast properties.

Although all Australian ski fields have plenty to offer beginner skiers through to those more advanced, there is also a lot more to do without having to strap into skis and snowboards.

Spot the wildlife

Winter is a great chance to spot some of Australia’s native wildlife as they roam the land even in these cooler conditions. Visitors can spot kangaroos jumping through the snow in Kosciuszko, New South Wales and wombats frolicking around Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

Get amongst the snow in Victoria

Victoria is home to many tours that provide unique offerings in the snow. Visitors can experience Australia’s winter wonderland first-hand by building a snowman, riding a toboggan or just to have a chance to get amongst the ice. Experience the snow from the comfort of a heated ex-Australian Army Land Rover with Tour of Duty Bright. Alternatively Wildlife Tours has a one day mountain tour to the Lake Mountain region, located only two hours from Melbourne. They visit the Stevenson Falls in Marysville, the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and ice-creamery, and enjoy hot chocolate and coffee in the snow.

Yulefest and Christmas in July

Yulefest is a one-of-a-kind event that takes place in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales throughout winter. Think log fires, singalongs, mulled wine, hearty Christmas fare and a possible encounter with Santa. Most Blue Mountains accommodation providers are offering packages throughout the period, so stay and experience the true hospitality of the locals. Thredbo will also hold their Christmas in July from 20 – 26 July.

Hiking at Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain’s snow-capped peaks are an impressive sight synonymous with winter in Tasmania. Adventure seekers can take in this view intimately by lacing up their hiking boots and setting foot on the Overland Track with Tasmanian Expeditions or with Cradle Huts Winter Walks. While the area is known year round for its scenic walks, witnessing winter in this part of Australia is unforgettable. To wind down after the challenging adventure, head to Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Snowshoeing in Thredbo and Mt Kosciusko

Far beyond the ski-fields and into the winter silence are snowshoe tours. Navigate through the thick, open and icy terrain with your guides on specially-made snow shoes. Thredbo runs tours through their back country taking in the scenic surrounds while K7 Adventures runs tours through Mt Kosciusko, giving visitors the chance to set up picnic lunches on top of the Crackenback Range. With no previous experience required, snowshoeing is the perfect activity if you don’t consider yourself a skier.
