Good Food Month: the Biggest Food Festival on Earth

Taste the best cuisine Australia has to offer at the world's largest food festival.

By Jac Taylor

Fuelled by the country’s passionate food culture, Australia’s travelling food festival, Good Food Month, runs throughout the year in several Australian cities for a month at a time. Over 1,000 events take place during the year, and more than 1,000 restaurants participate in the festival nationwide. The festival attracts over two million guests who get a unique chance to meet Australia's most innovative chefs, taste local Australian produce and enjoy some of the nation's best dining experiences, usually at lower prices. If the city you’re visiting is hosting the Good Food Month, be sure to book tickets to one of the events!

TOP THINGS TO DO

HAVE A GOOD BREAKFAST IN BRISBANE
Australians love to go to breakfast or brunch, and most Australian cafés usually have lavish breakfast menus. In July, many local cafés in Brisbane celebrate the Good Food Month by taking part in the 'Breakfast Club'. Tuck into a customised breakfast menu and a tea or coffee for just $20. Besides enjoying a hearty breakfast the Australian way, you can get to try interesting creations – every café offers surprising takes on the morning meal, from sweet green-tea waffles to savoury risotto.

Good Food Month takes place in Brisbane 1-31 July, 2017.

CELEBRATE THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS IN CANBERRA
In every city participating in the Good Food Month, the most popular event is usually the free, family-friendly Night Noodle Market. However, in Canberra, the Night Noodle Markets are even more fun because they coincide with Canberra’s ‘Enlighten Event’.

The capital’s annual festival of lights illuminates its most famous buildings as a backdrop to this urban night market where visitors can taste delicious modern Asian, hawker-style fare in a festive setting. Try new dishes at stalls run by some of the city’s most innovative eateries while you are entertained by live music and head for themed bars and chill-out zones to wind down your day.

MELBOURNE – A PARADISE OF HEAVENLY SWEETS
Sweetfest is a two-day festival that showcases Melbourne’s top dessert chefs – and it is also a major event on Melbourne's Good Food Month calendar. This heavenly ice cream and dessert-filled festival is held in North Melbourne, at a beautiful heritage location. One of the highlights is a contest where featured chefs pitch their skills to see who can outdo the giant raspberry macarons or famous caramelised bacon ice-cream sandwich from past years' contests. Don't miss the chance to learn how to make your own Instagram-worthy treats from cake experts and pastry specialists, or sip sparkling wine while taking in the festive mood.

PERTH'S CRAZY FOOD INNOVATION NIGHTS
The spirit of Good Food Month brings experimentation and foodie innovation to every city, and when the festival comes to Perth, local chefs get bold and innovative. The city has many top restaurants, and Good Food Month's Hats Off event holds one-night-only special dinners in eateries that have been awarded with at least one Chef Hat – an Australian accolade for exceptional food. Perth’s celebrity chefs use this chance to create brilliant new flavours, so seize the opportunity to be the first to savour these unique dishes!

SYDNEY SPRING PARTY
In Sydney, Good Food Month falls in October, amidst spring's full bloom. Its picnic event, the Spring Social, gathers locals and tourists alike to pamper their taste buds. An afternoon of lawn croquet game, live piano music and fine food set the mood for this 1920s-style garden party, where some of Sydney’s best chefs get busy on the barbecues and dessert tables. Soak up the Sydney sunshine while sipping Australia’s famous Pimms cocktail.

DON’T MISS LUNCH

The most awaited event of Good Food Month throughout the country is the Let’s Do Lunch program. Some of Australia’s top restaurants offer specially designed menus at reasonable prices, allowing you to try some big name dining on a budget. Do make reservations – the more popular the restaurants, the faster they are booked up.

HOW TO GET THERE

Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney all have international and domestic airports, with Sydney and Melbourne major international hubs.
