White Night lights up Melbourne after dark

Discover the visual arts, illuminations and diversity of cultural events that light Melbourne’s White Night.

Melbourne was recently flooded with colour and light as part of the White Night all-night cultural festival. Returning for its third successful year, the festival invited guests to discover Melbourne’s cultural heart in a series of displays across the city from 7pm to 7am.

The festival is inspired by Paris’ Nuit Blanche and an international network of White Night events where the focus is on experiencing spectacular visual art exhibitions, illuminations, music, theatre and other cultural activities across 12 night time hours. This year’s event in Melbourne included more than 80 free events set across nine precincts from Southbank Boulevard to Victoria Street and Melbourne Museum, and from Elizabeth Street to Russell Street and along the banks of the Yarra River.

Around a half a million people came out to experience the visual art, ambient illuminations, installations, special dining experiences, film screenings and live performances of White Night 2015. Some of Melbourne’s major cultural institutions were also on show as part of the festival. Venues such as Arts Centre Melbourne, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne Museum, National Gallery of Victoria and the State Library of Victoria put on special programs over the entire 12 hours of White Night, adding to the breadth of experiences available to festival goers.

Although White Night Melbourne is a young event, it has already cultivated a significant audience which keeps growing year on year. Since the event’s inception only two years ago, crowds have grown to be even bigger than those who attend New Year’s Eve celebrations in Melbourne. Thanks to the event’s unique dusk to dawn schedule, it’s still possible to experience White Night without crowds,. This year, many visitors to the festival started with a late dinner before roaming the art lined streets and exploring the cultural venues after midnight. Its a perfect way to spend a late Summer’s night in Melbourne!
