Barossa Valley, South Australia
Celebrate an anniversary, book a honeymoon or rekindle your relationship with five of Australia's most romantic escapes.
By Ellie Schneider
It doesn’t matter if you like your romance served hot (dinner on a private tropical beach) or cold (snuggling up around a Tasmanian lake). Australia has a wealth of getaways for couples.
BREAKFAST WITH THE LOCALS IN THE BAROSSA
Forget lazing around all morning in bed. Early starts can be just as seductive, at least in South Australia's Barossa Valley, just over an hour drive north of Adelaide. At The Louise, the Barossa's premium boutique accommodation, guests can enjoy a decadent picnic breakfast beside families of wild kangaroos. Your guide will pick you up at dawn and take you to the nearby conservation park where your gourmet picnic will be waiting. Wildlife encounters don't come more memorable than this.
ENJOY A COOL CHANGE IN TASMANIA
Frosty mornings and cosy fires can be just as romantic as the tropics, and there's plenty of cool climate luxury to be found in Tasmania. The island is rich with scenic spots, but few are as lovely as forest-fringed Lake St Clair, a 2½ hour drive north-west from Hobart. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, it is a great place to grab a canoe and a thermos of hot chocolate, and drift along without a care. Pumphouse Point offers luxury accommodation in a 1940s hydroelectric pumphouse, suspended over the lake. Each room has a larder packed with local produce, such as cheeses, cured meats and wines.
FIND A PRIVATE BEACH IN QUEENSLAND
Every couple needs a stretch of sand to call their own. Fortunately Queensland has thousands of beaches to choose from, so you can always find a deserted spot to unwind. But if you’re truly seeking solitude, Bedarra Island is an all-inclusive resort hidden within 45 hectares (111 acres) of tropical rainforest and uninhibited beaches. Enjoy a candlelit dinner on the sand or pack a gourmet picnic and take a dinghy to a nearby deserted island. Arrive by boat from Mission Beach, or catch a 45 minute scenic flight from Cairns Airport.
SAVOUR THE SILENCE IN THE KIMBERLEY
Australia is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, but few are as spellbinding as the Kimberley. This remote part of Western Australia is known for its ancient beauty, especially its stark gorges and extensive bushland. El Questro Wilderness Park is one of Australia's last true frontiers and offers plenty of secret places to explore. There are a number of accommodation options to choose from, with the most luxurious being The Homestead, offering magnificent views of the Chamberlain Gorge. Tailor-made excursions for Homestead guests include horseback riding and a private picnic atop a waterfall.
INDULGE IN THE RAINFOREST AT BYRON BAY
The ancient subtropical rainforests surrounding Byron Bay are a wonderful place to explore together. Even better, however, is the option to swap the adventure for a spot of indulgence, with matching massage tables set up among the foliage. The Byron at Byron arranges massages in the rainforest for in-house guests. The two hour treatment begins with a guided walk to the heart of the rainforest. There you'll enjoy a foot cleanse, body scrub and aromatherapy massage with the spa's signature blend.
