The Royal Ballet Company is one of the best in the world, and its travelling troupe is about to land on Australian shores for the first time in 15 years.  Bringing two works — The Winter’s Tale and Woolf Works — exclusively to Brisbane’s QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre) will mark the first time the pieces will have been performed outside of their home at London’s Covent Garden. Following on from the spate of Brisbane performances, QPAC is also presenting a Gala Performance by The Royal Ballet in Cairns. The performance will comprise excerpts from much-loved ballets including Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote.

This really is an experience worth travelling to Brisbane to see.

2017 QPAC International Series

Britain’s flagship ballet company, The Royal Ballet front-page the 2017 QPAC International Series with the performance of two works, The Winter’s Tale and Woolf Works, from 29 June to 9 July.

The Winter's Tale, The Royal Ballet,The Royal Opera House, London, United Kingdom

The Winter’s Tale
The Winter’s Tale, choreographed by The Royal Ballet’s Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, is the first full-length adaptation of a Shakespeare play by the company since Kenneth MacMillan’s 1965 production of Romeo and Juliet. It features designs and costumes by Bob Crowley, score by Joby Talbot, lighting design by Natasha Katz and music direction by David Briskin.

Woolf Works, The Royal Ballet,The Royal Opera House, London, United Kingdom

Woolf Works
Wayne McGregor’s full-length ballet, Woolf Works, which secured the 2016 Olivier Award for best new dance production, is inspired by three of Virginia Woolf’s landmark novels; Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves, as well as her autobiographical writings. Set to a new score by acclaimed German-born British composer Max Richter, Woolf Works features lighting designs by Lucy Carter, film design by Ravi Deepres, and costumes by Moritz Junge with Uzma Hameed, dramaturg.

Since 2009, the QPAC International Series has helped shine a spotlight on Brisbane’s cultural scene since bringing exclusive productions like the Paris Opera Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet and most recently France’s Ballet Preljocaj with Snow White to Queensland.

See both performances at the Lyric Theatre from 29 June to 9 July 2017.

Gala Performance, Cairns
Following on from The Royal Ballet’s two Australian-premiere works, Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale in Brisbane, The Royal Ballet will give a special one-night-only performance in Cairns as part of the QPAC International Series, bringing the world’s best performers to regional Queensland. The Gala Performance, featuring around 15 of The Royal Ballet company’s dancers – including Principal dancers Marianela Nuñez, Edward Watson and Australian Alexander Campbell, and fellow Australian dancer Calvin Richardson – includes a special series of short solo and pas de deux works, including moments from Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Le Corsaire and Don Quixote.
