7 amazing Australian beach houses for hire

Ready for a seaside getaway? These beautiful beach houses are waiting for you.

By Ute Junker

Long days lazing on the sand and balmy evenings listening to waves wash against the shore: when it is time to relax, there is nowhere better than the beach. From tropical island hideaways to city beach luxury, here are a handful of Australia’s most spectacular beach houses.

East Bedarra Island Retreat, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

East Bedarra Island Retreat, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland

A word of warning: a stay at East Bedarra Island Retreat could put you off tropical resorts for life. That is because this villa on the Great Barrier Reef is the next best thing to having your own private island. A romantic retreat designed for two, the villa offers a range of activities – snorkelling and fishing gear are provided, as well as a kayak – or you can simply cool off with a swim off one of the island's deserted beaches. Dive trips to the best reefs can also be organised. Transfers to East Bedarra Island Retreat leave from Mission Beach, halfway between the tropical cities of Townsville and Cairns.

The Ocean Retreat, Falmouth, Tasmania

The Ocean Retreat, Falmouth, Tasmania

There is nothing rustic about this four-bedroom villa in Falmouth near Freycinet National Park, with its sleek interiors and glass walls that put the amazing view front and centre. Halfway between Hobart and Launceston, The Ocean Retreat is conveniently located for exploring the Bay of Fires region and beautiful Wineglass Bay, but allow yourself some time to stay in and relax. In the warmer months, the deck – complete with plunge pool and barbecue – is the place to be; in winter, curl up in front of the fireplace instead. Each bedroom comes with an en suite and a walk-in wardrobe.

The Dune House, Queenscliff, Victoria

The Dune House, Queenscliff, Victoria

Just 90 minutes from Melbourne, the lovely seaside town of Queenscliff, with its heritage streetscapes, is a favourite getaway for Melburnians. As the name suggests, this architect-designed four-bedroom house, all blonde wood and neutral tones, is built above the sand dunes flanking the beach and screened by tea trees. A private path takes you to the beach. Spend your morning frolicking in the sand and the afternoon lazing on your sprawling day bed.

1770 Beach Shacks, 1770, Queensland

1770 Beach Shacks, 1770, Queensland

The under-the-radar twin towns of 1770 and Agnes Water are the tropical getaways of choice for holidaymakers who prefer laid-back luxury. There are four separate hideaways under the 1770 Beach Shacks banner, each accommodating two to six people. These rustic retreats have four-poster beds draped with mosquito nets and wonderful views from their decks. There is a surf beach at Agnes Water, and plenty of local walking trails. A day trip to Lady Musgrave Island is also recommended.

Adelaide Luxury Beach House, Adelaide, South Australia

Adelaide Luxury Beach House, Henley Beach, South Australia

It may lie just 15 minutes from the centre of Adelaide but once you are ensconced at Adelaide Luxury Beach House you will feel a world away from everyday life. Every level of this three-storey house has superb ocean views; you may even spot dolphins frolicking among the waves. Watching the sun sink into the ocean from the rooftop terrace, with a glass of local wine in hand, is the perfect way to wind up a leisurely day. You can also sign up for a range of extras, ranging from a personal chef to in-house massages or even a session with a personal trainer.

26 Brownell Drive, Byron Bay, New South Wales

26 Brownell Drive, Byron Bay, New South Wales

This ultra-glamorous Byron Bay beach house has a spectacular location near the bay's famous lighthouse, as well as four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. Our favourite features include the horizon pool with built-in day beds, and the fabulous sunset views from the open-plan entertainment areas. Daily housekeeping is included, so you can devote your time to chilling out.

Whitehorses, Margaret River, Western Australia

Whitehorses, Margaret River, Western Australia

The Margaret River region, three hours south of Perth, has to be one of Australia's loveliest escapes. Blessed with a beautiful string of beaches as well as some of the country's best wineries, this is a destination in which you'll want to linger. And that is exactly what you are encouraged to do at Whitehorses. The four bedrooms are spread out across the lower level, while the open-plan living and dining area upstairs enjoys magnificent ocean views.
