If you crave a modern Australian beach experience, you'd be hard pressed to find better than the boutique hotel, Halcyon House. In the laid-back coastal village of Cabarita Beach (just over an hours drive south of Brisbane), this retreat fuses the original architecture of a 1960s Aussie beach motel with modern Australian design. Halcyon House was launched in 2015 to international acclaim, with Condé Nast Traveller's David Prior saying it represented "a new era of boutique properties in Australia". US travel magazine Travel + Leisure declared it one of the best new hotels on the planet in 2016. Rooms start at AUD$550 a night, including à la carte breakfast for two.
HOW TO GET THERE
Halcyon House is at Cabarita Beach, in northern New South Wales, about an 80 minute drive south of Brisbane. It's just 20 minutes south of the Gold Coast International Airport, or 40 minutes north of the hip surf town of Byron Bay. Luxury transfers, or car hire, can be arranged from any of these locations. You can also rent an Audi A1 from the hotel when you arrive.
