You like the finer things in life. But, but you also like adventure. As anyone who’s ever been glamping (glamorous camping) can tell you, a good glamp combines elements of both, to create a stay under the stars that doesn’t skimp on the little luxuries.
But there comes a point in every glamper’s life when a “normal” glamping experience just isn’t enough. Sometimes, you want an upgrade. Sometimes, you want a tent with a lounge inside it. A tent with two separate wings – and space for storage, and shelving. A tent so very grand, it doesn’t even go by the name of "tent” anymore. That’s where The Lodge comes in.
MELBOURNE’S FAVOURITE GLAMPSITE
St Jerome’s – The Hotel opened to the joy of Snapchatters everywhere in 2015. With its potted forests, phantasmagorical colour scheme (just check out that bed linen) and unlikely location on a rooftop in the middle of Melbourne city, the hotel was an instant success. Visitors flocked to spend a night in one of the 20 quirkily decorated bell tents, each resplendent in a riot of colour and comfort in a funky, Astro-turfed environment. Featuring a plush bed, cooler box of complimentary craft beers, cider and water, brightly coloured furniture, premium bath and hair products, Aspar cotton eye masks, a digital tablet (for watching movies in bed, of course) and all the usual goodies, such as electric blankets and internal heating, the tents are a haven from the surrounding elements. Complimentary 24-hour room service means you don’t even have to leave your bed – simply text your wishes to reception, and staff will come running.
HOW VERY GLAMP-OROUS!
The Lodge, however, takes things to the next level. With not one but two central poles holding up its canvas walls, St Jerome’s newest tent offers a sense of spaciousness to satisfy even the fussiest of glamp-oisseurs. Step inside to discover a three-seater couch topped with decorative pillows and rugs on your left, and a wardrobe area so large it’s practically walk-in on your right, complete with bathrobes, towels and slippers. The breakfast cart by the bed allows you to dine and recline – and breakfast is, of course, included. What more could a glamper ask of life?
CALLING ALL EXPLORERS
As with all good glamp experiences, an element of exploration is involved. Luckily, just outside your tent you’ll find the Melbourne wilderness calling. Shops, cafes, restaurants, galleries and museums are all nearby, but if you’d prefer to simply luxuriate in your canvas haven – and many do – you’ll find an assortment of useful distractions closer to home. Head to the General Store (hotel bar area) to enjoy complimentary sweet snacks such as cupcakes or macaroons each afternoon at 3pm; or admire the skyline views between 5pm and 7pm while sipping on your complimentary daily cocktail. You might prefer slipping in to the complimentary infra-red sauna for a relaxing detox; or joining the morning group meditation – also complimentary (Friday and Saturday night guests only).
FROM A TO BED
Virtually everything is included in your stay, from the hand-delivered gelato desserts (made exclusively for the hotel by Gelato Messina), to the flask of T2 Sleeptime tea that thoughtful staff will bring to your tent before bed each night. You’ll need to forage for your own dinner, but with Melbourne’s renowned restaurant scene just downstairs there’s little chance you’ll go hungry. In fact, whether you stay in The Lodge or make do with a “regular” tent, we suspect you’ll walk away satisfied with the experience. Final score? Tent out of 10!
