Melbourne is taking the global unicorn trend by the horn, staging a two-day festival where everything will be rainbow-coloured, sparkly – and very, very cute.

Melbourne is renowned for being a bit "out there" (have you seen their art-covered laneways, for instance?). Now the city is planning its first unicorn festival. Head to Melbourne Central, a shopping mall in the city centre, to eat unicorn-themed treats – which just beg to be Instagrammed first – experiment with who-cares-if-it’s-winter-outside sparkly, unicorn-inspired make-up or just groove to the DJ who will be spinning some fun tunes.

Rainbow dreams

WHY UNICORNS RULE THE WORLD

If you hadn’t noticed, unicorns have magically taken over the world. Everywhere you look, unicorn-themed products are popping up – from inflatable horn headbands to shower caps, mugs, erasers, nail stickers, hairbrushes, shoulder bags, pens, pencil cases, plush toys and more. Some trace the trend to YouTube, where unicorn-themed make-up tutorials have proven incredibly popular, but unicorn-themed food and drink has also caught on – even Starbucks caught unicorn fever, releasing a pink and blue Unicorn Frappuccino for just a week back in April. Now Melbourne has noted this global trend and decided to throw its own festival in honour of the universally adored, mythical one-horned creature. Head to Melbourne Central’s Level 2 Link Bridge over two nights to indulge your passion for all things one-horned and rainbow-coloured.

SNAP FIRST, EAT LATER

We know – shimmery, sugary, unicorn-shaped food is almost too cute to eat. But it seems like everyone is adding a swirly horn, long lashes, pastel colours and glitter to their food creations. At the inaugural Unicorn Festival, expect to have a difficult time choosing between limited-edition artisan unicorn doughnuts from Doughboys Doughnuts and Bistro Morgan, unicorn macarons, cake-pops and tarts from JY Cake Designs, cute-as-pie icing designs from Cupcake Central or pretty-as-a-picture biscuits and baked goods from Instagram baking sensation Vickiee Yo. Sweet scroll specialists Oregano Bakery will serve fairy floss scrolls while baker Ray Ray churns out adorable unicorn ice-creams and St Gerry’s top their Greek doughnuts with rainbow sprinkles and Persian fairy floss. You can even grab a Latino unicorn by checking out the paletas, Mexican-inspired treats-on-sticks served by ChillBro.

CHANNEL THE UNICORN VIBE

Track back to where this trend all started by trying out a little unicorn-themed make-up, thanks to Melbourne Central beauty retailers that include Mecca Maxima, Sephora and cult make-up brand 3INA (pronounced mee-nah). Your new look could include rainbow-coloured lips, plenty of shimmer and glitter, pastel eyeshadow, painted flowers and long, unicorn-like lashes. Once you’ve got your unicorn face on, pop on a horn and head into the photo booth for a commemorative take-home snap. The festival will take place on 3-4 August between 5pm and 9pm each day.
