Forty-four designers are set to showcase their resort 2018 collections across five fashion-packed days. This is the second year that MBFWA will showcase resort collections instead of the usual spring/summer or autumn/winter – a change made to align the showings with the international retail calendar.
With Dion Lee and Romance Was Born book-ending the festival, Sass + Bide returning after 14 years of international showings, Anna Quan making her runway debut, and Ellery celebrating 10 years of Australian fashion week showings, the 2017 MBFWA will transform Sydney into a mecca of fashion and style.
One of Australia’s most-loved design expats is returning home to open the show and unveil one of his biggest runway collections boasting over 40 looks. Now based in New York and comfortably residing in the New York fashion week schedule, Lee is one of Australia’s most successful designers to be catapulted onto an international stage. The coveted opening spot reaffirms the label’s preeminent placing, following in the footsteps of Kym Ellery, Toni Maticevski and Carla Zampatti in opening the show.
Sass & Bide
Having presented their last official collection in Sydney in 2003 (when the label was helmed by brand founders Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton), MBFWA welcomes back the Australian label for their 2018 resort collection. The label has been focusing its attention overseas – something that’s now changing under the label’s current head designer Sarah Berman. The new collection remains true to its staples (heavy embellishment, tribal accents, and denim) and has been inspired by art and culture and the architecture of Antonio Gaudi.
The queen of deconstructed dressing – you know Anna Quan by her take on the French cuff shirt from her resort 2015 collection. Quan takes the familiar and twists and turns it until it becomes refreshingly novel. Last year Quan was part of the Mercedes-Benz Australian Fashion Week Next Gen show, this year she’s on the main stage – her first solo show on schedule.
10 years after her debut at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, Kym Ellery is celebrating by holding a retrospective event of the brand’s most iconic looks from the last decade. The event, in the form of a VIP cocktail party, will be held in conjunction with Etihad Airways who are also celebrating their 10th anniversary.
Romance Was Born
The creative duo behind Romance Was Born, Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett, never fail to disappoint. This year they are set to close fashion week with a bang (or more likely, a burst of colour). Last year, MBFWA audiences looked at the world through kaleidoscopic colour – 1920s decadence and Liberace were the themes that turned the idea of a typical runway show on its head. No one was surprised, this is after all the label that has served the fashion literati Doilies and Pearls, Renaissance Dinosaurs and Mushroom Magic in the past. Creating a fanciful, colourful world is what this duo do best and we can’t wait to see what their 2018 resort collection holds in store.
The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia schedule will feature the Resort collections of designers including: Albus Lumen, alice mcCALL, Akira, Anna Quan, Bec & Bridge, Bianca Spender, C/MEO, Christopher Esber, Dion Lee, Double Rainbouu, Ginger & Smart, Hansen & Gretel, Justin Cassin, Karla Špetić, Katama By Garrett Neff, KITX, macgraw, Mariam Seddiq, Michael Lo Sordo, Pageant, Romance Was Born, Roopa Pemmaraju, Sass & Bide, Steven Khalil, Strateas.Carlucci, Ten Pieces, Thomas Puttick, Vale Denim, VMAJOR, We Are Kindred, Yousef Akbar, Zhivago.
