Spectacular mountain landscapes, wild rivers, impressive escarpments, snow gum forests and wide open grasslands known as the high plains are some of the characteristics of Victoria’s stunning High Country. The region has the greatest range of flora and fauna in Victoria with brown trout and other fish commonly found in the rivers and streams of the untouched Alpine National Park. Nearby the Rutherglen wine region is famous for Tokay, Muscat and Durif while the King Valley is home to Italian wine varietals. Explore some of Australia’s most interesting boutique wines, craft beers and gin in the Yarra Valley en route back to Melbourne. 

DAY 1: OUTDOOR FEAST AMONGST THE VINES

Fowles Winery, High Country, Victoria.

Evening
At Fowles Winery – of the award-winning Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch wine label – eat a freshly caught feast of local rabbit cooked over an open fire. The meal is complemented with delicious produce from the area and award-winning wine produced from the vines on the property. 

DAY 2: FISHING AND SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS

Fishing, High Country, Victoria.

Morning
The day starts with a drive to the famous wine-making region of Rutherglen. Get acquainted with the signature wines on offer from Muscats, Tokays and the rich reds – Shiraz, Durif and Cabernet. Meet the fourth and fifth generation winemakers who draw on the family traditions while harnessing modern techniques to keep Rutherglen on the map.

Afternoon
After a sumptuous lunch at the award-winning Terrace Restaurant, at historic All Saints Winery, get ‘off the grid’ by being dropped into a local watering hole teaming with local fish. Spend the afternoon enjoying the pristine air and untouched landscape fishing for your dinner. 

Evening
Cook your catch over a coal fire accompanied by some local produce and wine cooled by the streams. Sit around the campfire and enjoy the company and the food before bedding down in your very cozy personalised bushman’s‘swag’ by the fire and under the great Australian sky.

DAY 3: BLACKMORE’S WAGYU FARM AND OPERA IN THE VALLEY

Blackmore Wagyu Beef, High Country, Victoria

Morning
Get transported from your remote fishing hole to Brown Brothers Winery in the King Valley gourmet town of Milawa. Freshen up and enjoy a gourmet Prosecco breakfast with local produce at the award-winning Patricia’s table. Relax during a short drive to Alexandra – the home of David Blackmore’s famous wagyu beef farm.

Afternoon
Spend a few hours with David and Ben Blackmore on the farm. Blackmore Wagyu is an award winning and internationally recognised producer of 100% Fullblood Wagyu beef cattle that are not diluted with any other breed. Enjoy a typical Aussie barbecue, with local craft beers, ciders and wines on the banks of the Goulburn River eating the best beef in the world and joined by one of David’s staunch supporters, Australian Chef and restaurateur, Neil Perry.

Evening
Travel a short distance to the nearby Yarra Valley wine region. Take a step back in time with an opera performance at Coombe Estate – the former home of legendary opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. Enjoy cocktails by the pool once frequented by Charlie Chaplin followed by a dinner showcasing seasonal and predominantly estate grown produce in the beautifully restored motor house and historic clock tower.

DAY 4: BREAKFAST WITH THE KOALAS

Healesville Sanctuary, Yarra Valley, Victoria.

Morning
On route back to Melbourne, stop off at the Healesville Sanctuary to enjoy a breakfast of local sparkling wine, fruit, cheese and local meats amongst the kangaroos, koalas and other Aussie animals in this award-winning sanctuary.
