Apothecary 1878

118 Hindley Street, Adelaide,
Adelaide, South Australia 5000

The Apothecary 1878 Wine Bar and Restaurant opened December 2002 in a heritage listed building in the heart of the West End precinct - a true incarnation of a European-style wine bar. The name comes from the 133-year-old antique pharmacy cabinets, which grace the front bar. Discovered buried beneath layers of dust at the rear of an Adelaide antique shop, and originally from London, these mahogany pieces feature pure crystal drawer handles with 18-carat gold leaf inscriptions. Tumbled marble floor tiles arranged in the same style as the footpaths of Italy are featured in the main bar. Classic Thonet chairs are drawn up to elegant solid marble and brass tables; a great place to sit and chat with friends over a bar plate and glass of wine or two. Antique chaise lounges and seating have been rescued to create the unique and inviting atmosphere in the upstairs function room. Rustic brickwork lines the walls, and some 1200 wines quietly sleep behind intricate wrought iron work in the restaurant. The historic feel is carried throughout with rich velvet carpet, mahogany cabinet and imported chandeliers. Explore the history, feel the culture, and lose yourself in the elegance.

Interned: Torrens Island 1914-1915

Migration Museum, 82 Kintore Avenue, Adelaide,
Adelaide, South Australia 5000

A century after the first men were interned at the Torrens Island Concentration Camp, a new exhibition at the Migration Museum explores this little-known chapter of South Australian World War One history. In August 1914 war broke out across Europe. Within months, hundreds of men were interned on the island in the Port River estuary. Sailors taken off enemy ships, Germans and Austrians living in South Australia, and even some naturalised British subjects found themselves behind barbed wire. Once on Torrens Island, the men became prisoners of war - out of sight and under guard. They had no idea how long they would be held. Wartime censorship meant details of their detention were suppressed. It was only years later that the brutal behaviour of the camp's commandant was revealed. Interned: Torrens Island 1914-1915 showcases arresting images by photographer Paul Dubotzki and insights from the diary of internee Frank Bungardy.
