The history of our unique piece of Tasmania can be traced back some 30,000 years to a time when it was an important hunting ground for the Tasmanian Aborigines. It was home to the Ben Lomond Tribe (Plangermaireener) and frequently visited by bands from the Oyster Bay Tribe (Paredarerme), who travelled up from their East Coast territory via a route past St Patricks Head. Named by Tobias Furneaux on St Patricks Day, 1773 St Patrick's Head was known to the Aborigines as Lumera Genena Wuggelina, which means 'a great molar tooth'. The peaked mountain at the eastern end of the Fingal Valley was an essential land mark for Aboriginal people as well as holding significant spiritual values.

Flinders and Freycinet Lookout

Intersection of Farrel and Elliot Street, Eyre Peninsula,
Whyalla, South Australia 5600

In 1802 Matthew Flinders was the first European to navigate and chart this unknown coast of South Australia, solving the centuries old mystery as to whether Australia was one continent or two. Ten months later, in January 1803, Louis-Claude de Freycinet navigated and charted the isolated coast for the Baudin expedition. He and his crew spent a night at sea, off what was to become Whyalla, and were impressed by the local scenery. In September 2001, as part of the Encounter 2002 project to recognise French exploration, the two explorers were commemorated at the lookout by contemporary sculptures and the area was renamed the Flinders and Freycinet Lookout. The lookout offers magnificent views of the upper Spencer Gulf, Southern Flinders Ranges and Middleback Range in the west.

Mayfield Bay's sandy beach and coastal area offers good camping, fishing, swimming, surfing and diving, as well as wonderful views across Great Oyster Bay to Freycinet Peninsula. The reserve has shady trees and toilet facilities but you'll need to bring your own drinking water and camping gear. A little further north from Mayfield Bay is the convict-built Spiky Bridge. This unusual looking bridge was built in the 1840s by a convict road gang. The bridge was built from local fieldstone with stones placed vertically along the parapet, giving the bridge its spiky appearance. It's been claimed that the spikes were designed to prevent cattle falling over the sides. There are also interpretation signs with information about the nearby Rocky Hills Probation Outstation convict ruins. The reserve is a 15-minute drive from Swansea and one-and-a-half-hour drive from Hobart.

Milton Vineyard

14635 Tasman Highway, North - Northeast,
Swansea, Tasmania 7190

Milton Vineyard was first farmed in 1826 initially for fine Tasmanian wool but is now producing fine cool climate wines. We are located at 42 degrees south on the dry sunny Freycinet Coast of Tasmania. The grapes are grown on free draining red loam liberally sprinkled with dolerite rocks. Our vineyard has a unique micro-climate that suits the ancient grape Pinot Noir. Also in our 13 hectare vineyard are plantings of the aromatics Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. Our focus is on producing small quantities of handmade wine. Close attention is paid to every detail in the vineyard and the wines represent this exacting work. The warm summers and modest cropping levels typically found on the Freycinet Coast of Tasmania provided the Dunbabin family with an excellent Pinot Noir, superb Riesling, lively Rosé, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, a complex and distinguished Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay, and an award winning Iced Riesling. All grown at our Milton Vineyard on Tasmania's East Coast. The vineyard is meticulously maintained and cared for with attention to detail being paramount. The fruit is hand-picked from mid-April and made into wine by award-winning contract winemakers Julian Alcorso, Greer Carland, and Glenn James at Winemaking Tasmania.

The Hazards Vineyard provides a tasting experience while overlooking the famous 'Hazards’ of the Freycinet Peninsular. It is the new home for the Devil’s Corner range. The opening of the vineyard coincides with the release of a new look for the Devil’s Corner wines. These premium Tasmanian wines, first developed in 1999, have taken on the breathtaking artwork by local Tasmanian artist Rebecca Birrell, exclusively commissioned for this wine. Her artwork is currently on show at The Hazards Vineyard. The Hazards Vineyard overlooks Moulting Lagoon, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The Ramsar Convention, to which Australia is a signatory, is a global intergovernmental treaty for the conservation of wetlands and their resources. The Moulting Lagoon Nature Reserve supports a large number of waterbirds, particularly black swans and Australian shelducks at key stages of their lifecycles and is a critical late-summer staging area for migratory waterbirds and shorebird species. The largest Tasmanian flock of greenshanks also occurs at the lagoon. Guests can picnic overlooking the vineyard and there are toilets on site.

The farm is made up of six different growing regions totalling just less than 185 acres and is a mixture of estuarine and fully marine growing areas. The estuarine areas are in the Great Swanport river estuary. The marine zones are offshore from the Freycinet National Park and are open to the Southern Ocean to the south. Our farm is located on the Freycinet peninsula, on the east coast of Tasmania, we are a two-and-a-half hour drive form Hobart and two hours from Launceston - part of the very popular East Coast Touring Route. Spring Vale Vineyard

130 Spring Vale Road, North - Northeast,
Cranbrook, Tasmania 7190

Spring Vale Vineyard is a small, family-owned winery at Cranbrook, on Tasmania's east coast. Cranbrook is a 15-minute drive north of Swansea (10 kilometres) and forty-five minutes' drive from the Freycinet National Park (50 kilometres). First planted in 1986, the six-hectare (15-acre) vineyard produces Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay grapes. Spring Vale is known for its intense varietal wines, which reflect the ideal growing conditions of the east coast. The Freycinet region is renowned for having the greatest hours of sunlight in Tasmania, a contributing factor in the intensity and structure of Spring Vale wines. All vineyard operations are carried out by hand, and wines are made on-site. The winery is owned and operated by the Lyne family; the current winemaker, Kristen Cush (formerly Kristen Lyne), is a fifth-generation resident of the property. Built in 1842, the original Spring Vale homestead is one of the oldest properties on the east coast and has been in the Lyne family since 1875. You can taste Spring Vale's range of fine wines at the cellar door and sales room, located in the original convict-built stables.
