Orange F.O.O.D Week

Head to the regional centre of Orange for 10 days of divine fresh food and rich autumnal colours at the Orange F.O.O.D Week in April. Less than 4 hours from Sydney, more than 60 events will let you savour the region’s famous fresh flavours and meet the people who create them. Breakfast in the vineyards, wander the apple orchards or take a cooking class in one of the acclaimed local restaurants. Attend a degustation dinner or a masquerade party and tour the area’s cool-climate wineries when the official events finish. Wherever you go, this lively country fiesta will leave you with new gusto for food, friends and life.

Orange is known locally as Australia’s colour city for its four vibrant seasons, and F.O.O.D Week is a great time to enjoy the spectacular autumn leaves. They make a breathtaking backdrop, whether you’re at the opening race day, touring the apple orchards or relaxing at a country-style lunch. Head to the huge harvest picnic, where the seasonal spread includes pickles, chutneys, cheeses, chocolates, cool-climate wine, freshly-baked bread and succulent peaches, strawberries and grapes.

The dining experiences run from relaxed to refined. Dress up for the dinner dance or don a mask for an Italian-themed masquerade party. Take your culinary sensibilities back to 1876 at a time-travelers’ dinner. Taste the gourmet creations of local chefs at a degustation dinner, or craft your own meal in a cooking class. Snack on fine cheeses and slow-cooked quinces at a supper club or trawl the night markets for a delicious desert. Sample a glass of local rose at a high tea or taste local vegetables in an Asian-style feast. The 100-mile dinner – where no ingredient comes from more than 100 miles away – is a delicious culinary concept showcasing the region’s produce.

F.O.O.D Week also showcases the vibrant local culture of Orange and its surrounding region. Fine dine with live jazz and listen to opera amongst the vines. Listen to Aussie poets and learn about native medicine on the  Aboriginal plant trail.  You can also catch a number of live theatre productions at the historic Orange Civic Theatre, specially timed to coincide with F.O.O.D Week.

Away from the formal events, check out the rainbow array of fresh produce at the farmers’ markets, held every second Saturday at the Orange Showground. If you’re a wine-lover, don’t leave town without first sampling the region’s excellent cool-climate wines at some of the 40 wineries. Wander past the historic buildings and through the parks and gardens cloaked in fiery leaves. Climb the extinct volcano of Mt Canobolas for panoramic views over town. When it comes to accommodation, choose from charming guesthouses, historic mansions, rustic bed and breakfasts, self cottages and boutique hotels.

Savour Orange F.O.O.D Week, a scenic, memorable journey from the field or farm gate to your plate.
