The tiny Northern European nation of Estonia, on the doorsteps of Finland and Russia, is set to celebrate its 25th International Arts and Culture Festival across the city of Melbourne. Eesti Päevad or Estonian Days is a biannual festival marked by a strong community of Estonian Australians who gather to share traditional craft skills, celebrate artistic endeavours, as well as enjoy a mix of sports and food events. The Estonian Festival is based in and around Estonian House (Eesti Maja). Events on the Festival calendar include a film festival, bar nights with performing musicians, folk dancing and choir performances. Market days are also being held throughout the festival, permitting the purchase of traditional goods such as lace and leatherwork. One of the key events in the festival calendar is the opening of the 2014 Visual Art Exhibition Place to be held at the prominent Red Gallery. A total of sixteen emerging as well as established artists with connections to Estonia have been selected for the exhibition, all of whom explore their relationship to the tiny independent nation. Artists such as Blue Mountains based Estonian printmaker, Tiiu Reissar, examine as well as celebrate their adopted homeland and their heritage. Photographer Rein Kivivali interrogates the freedoms younger Estonians now have in comparison to those from previous generations who lived under Soviet occupation. Bernadette Pilli, both an artist as well as the Place exhibition curator, is relying upon maps as inspiration to praise landscape and memory. Please check the website for more information.
