Owen Springs Reserve

Owen Springs Reserve is popular with four-wheel drive visitors seeking a quiet bush camp. The Hugh River runs the length of the reserve and offers many great places for camping, picnicking, birdwatching and swimming. The reserve is a 30-40 minute drive south-west of Alice Springs. Discover the rocky gorges and red sandy country surrounding the river with its stretches of broad sandy banks lined with shady River Red Gums and the large waterhole after which the reserve takes its name. Camping is allowed within Lawrence Gorge and near Redbank Waterhole. The reserve is rich in explorer and pastoral history. Follow the main access track through the reserve and you are retracing John McDouall Stuart's route through the MacDonnell Ranges in 1860, which opened Central Australia to white settlement. The construction of the Overland Telegraph Line and the establishment of a cattle station followed. Wander around the ruins of the Old Owen Springs Homestead, the first station homestead built in Central Australia. Access to the reserve is via Larapinta Drive, 50 kilometres west of Alice Springs, or via the Stuart Highway, 66 kilometres south of Alice Springs. A high clearance four-wheel drive is essential to negotiate the track into the reserve.

The museum shares stories of ordinary people who achieved extraordinary success against huge challenges. Take the 5-minute silent walk to the Fred and Meg McKay Peace Garden, the resting place of Fred and Meg McKay, which is adjacent to the Swag Chapel that was hand built by students and staff. On Wednesday nights, during school terms only, enjoy a billy tea and damper with the outback students (bookings are essential). The Fred McKay Museum is located in the Fred McKay Education Centre, an iconic, symbolic building. The museum is part of the Flynn Trail and is open during school days from 9am to 11am. It is closed from December to the end of January inclusive.

Tangentyere Artists is an Aboriginal art centre renowned for its paintings and local seed jewellery, which is produced by over 400 town camp residents. Araluen Mountain Bike Trails

Araluen Mountain Bike Trails includes more than 15 kilometres of dedicated single mountain bike track and an extensive network of fire trail set amongst the West MacDonnell Ranges. The trails are unlike any other in Australia due to the arid rangeland terrain, ideal for mountain biking. The trails are managed by the Central Australian Rough Rider Mountain Bike Club, who are dedicated local mountain bike rider with a strong commitment to social, recreational riding, trail development and junior rider development. Regular social rides depart from the Alice Springs Scout Hall at the corner of Larapinta and Lovegrove Drives on Wednesday nights. Trails are suitable for a range of riders, with loops available for juniors and novice riders. Trail use is free for all Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) members and members are cover by the MTBA insurance policy while riding on the trail network. Non members are not covered, but can participate in social rides for a AUD5.00 a day license. Tjanpi Desert Weavers is a vibrant not-for-profit Aboriginal social enterprise of the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women's Council. More than 400 Aboriginal women artists from 28 remote communities across 350,000 square kilometres of the Central and Western Deserts work with Tjanpi to create artworks that are unique, innovative and constantly evolving. Adding a contemporary spin to the traditional, women create baskets, jewellery and an astonishing array of sculptures from locally collected desert grasses bound with string, wool or raffia; often incorporating feathers, seeds and found materials. Tjanpi provides one of few opportunities for women living in these remote communities to earn their own income. However Tjanpi is much more than just fibre art and income; it is firmly embedded in contemporary Central and Western Desert culture as a movement that celebrates Life, Creativity and Country. Tjanpi Desert Weavers is an Aboriginal governed and directed social enterprise and all profits go towards improving the lives of women living in the NPY Lands. Visit our Alice Springs Gallery to see first hand the beautiful work created by mothers, daughters, aunties, sisters and grandmothers. The Alice Springs Reptile Centre specialises in things that hiss and slither, which are rare, impossible, or undesirable to come across in the wild. Home to over 100 reptiles, the centre displays its inhabitants in recreations of their natural environment. Enter the gecko cave to see the different species of this diminutive and shy lizard from around Alice Springs, the Barkly Tablelands and the Top End. Terry the saltwater crocodile is in an enclosure with glass panels that give you a glimpse into his underwater world and afford great photo opportunities. See huge perentie goannas, and the show of frill-necked lizards, and desert-dwelling thorny devils. Handle a python or see the lizards being fed. Some of the world's most venomous snakes, including inland taipans, brown snakes, death adders and mulga (king brown) snakes are on display safely behind glass. The Alice Springs Reptile Centre is open daily. If you are visiting during the cooler months of May to August, the recommended viewing times are between 11am and 3pm when the reptiles are most active. Talks are conducted daily at 11am, 1pm and 3.30pm.

During the Easter long weekend, when the rest of Australia is trying to pluck up the courage to ride though wind, rain and bracing cold temperatures, the mountain bikers in the Red Centre are enjoying warm sun and clear blue skies. The Easter in the Alice MTB Muster is a three-day, four-stage mountain biking event, plus a kids ride. The event is run by the Central Australian Rough Riders (CARR), and it is held in Alice Springs from the Saturday to the Monday of the Easter long weekend.

Rotary Club of Alice Springs Bangtail Muster

Join in the madcap fun of one of Alice Springs' major street parades. The Bangtail Muster is the annual fundraiser for the Alice Springs Youth Centre and one of the Centre's major events. The centrepiece of the event is a parade of floats down Todd Mall, which starts at late morning adjacent to the Memorial Club and finishes at Anzac Oval. The story behind the Muster goes back to the old days when cattle were the main industry of the Centre and Stockmen would cut of the ends of the tails to record the number of cattle mustered. The theme for this year will be 'Our Community'.

Molly's Bash

Aileron Bush Weekend

A weekend full action, adventure and fun for everyone. Come and see the cowboys and cowgirls as they pit themselves against the beasts for that elusive eight seconds. This extreme rough stock rodeo has plenty of action and excitement and plenty of spills and thrills. Activities over the weekend are the notorious Mexican donkey race, a Ladies Boot Throwing competition, a tug-a-war and plenty of kids’ sports and novelty events. Test your skills in the Iron Man / Iron Woman. Watch the local kids rev it up in the dust, in their home made (usually from cardboard) Utes and watch the best bubs’ Ute/Pram parade. On Saturday night, adults and kids can join in the fun with the local talent quest and afterwards hit the dance floor and dance the night away with live entertainmen. Camping is available from Friday night to Monday morning. Food will be available from Saturday morning to Sunday night. Please byo alcohol as there are no bar facilities.

The stalls offer a variety of arts and crafts, fresh produce, plants, clothes, books, jewellery and global foods that will give that enhanced shopping experience for the last minute Christmas shopper. Come and take part in celebrating the festive season in the colourful carnival atmosphere of the Todd Mall. The carnival starts at 5pm, finishing at 9pm.
