Newstead Park Memorials

199 Breakfast Creek Road, Brisbane Area,
Newstead, Queensland 4006

Newstead Park, on Brisbane River, conceals many stories-including its part in WWI. A memorial trophy cannon unveiled near the rotunda in 1922 caused controversy: an alderman suggested it was an 'emblem of evil' and that the money would be better spent supporting returned servicemen. The cannon was removed in the 1950s, donated to the 9th Battalion-and made way for the Australian American Memorial, one of only two such memorials in Australia, attesting to Brisbane's importance in the Allied victory in the South-West Pacific. The grounds of Newstead House, Brisbane's oldest surviving residence, also hosted fundraising efforts during WWI. A dolls' carnival in 1917 was a special drawcard, raising money to send 'comforts' to the troops in the trenches, specifically the 25th Battalion. Newstead House was occupied by the US Army from 1942 through to the end of WWII. The grounds reflect the American occupation and hold memorials to the Australian Navy Corvettes, submariners and Vietnam veterans.

Herberton War Memorial

Myers Street, Tablelands Area,
Herberton, Queensland 4872

Herberton's war memorial, a popular 'Digger' soldier statue-stands out, and not just because of its soldier's posture: erect, head high. This monument specifically acknowledges an Aboriginal serviceman among its honoured. The painted stone memorial, unveiled in the early 1920s, is a tribute to 199 local men who enlisted in WWI. Australians were proud of their army of volunteers: many monuments accordingly record all names, providing a rich insight into the community's support of the war. The plinth on which the khaki uniformed soldier stands also identifies 28 war dead: 21 killed and seven died on service, including a man designated as Aboriginal. Monumental masons AL Petrie and Sons of Brisbane created this memorial, part of their own virtual army of soldier statues embodying the ANZAC traits of loyalty, courage, youth, innocence and masculinity. A path leads to the memorial, now set in established gardens. A captured gun or 'war trophy' is located at the front of the monument.

Cunnamulla War Memorial Fountain

John Street, Paroo Area,
Cunnamulla, Queensland 4490

An inscription is all that identifies an ornately carved water fountain as a war memorial, standing in a traffic island at a five-way intersection in the outback town centre of Cunnamulla. Paroo Shire decided on a war memorial fountain in 1920. The process of selecting and installing a monument took some time. Despite the submission of memorial designs from AL Petrie and sons in Brisbane, the council and the Diggers Racing Club collaborated on the purchase of a stock item, and had it railed to Cunnamulla - an identical fountain can be found in NSW. It was installed prior to the Armistice Day race carnival in 1926 and unveiled on ANZAC Day 1927. Fountains were an unusual choice in Queensland. It's thought that the symbology of water, a scarce commodity in outback Queensland, may have been considered a suitable 'sacrifice'. The centrepiece comprises four basins decreasing in scale as they peak. Gargoyles' heads, winged griffins holding shields bearing emus and kangaroos, leaf-like motifs and scrollwork add to the elaborate classic design. The figure of a little boy stands at the very top. The fountain doesn't bear names of the fallen: they're found on an honour board in the Civic Centre.

Yeronga Memorial Park

Ipswich Road, Brisbane Area,
Yeronga, Queensland 4104

Yeronga Memorial Park is a living reminder of the impact WWI had on a community. Of the 559 residents who enlisted from (then) Stephens Shire, 97 names appear on marble tablets in the centre of a domed pavilion, designed by returned serviceman Sergeant Henry Priest (9th Battalion) and fine-tuned by architect George Trotter. A similar number of trees were planted between 1917 and 1919. Each tree represented a local life lost. Today, the mature weeping figs of Honour Avenue, one of Australia's earliest such boulevards, create a cathedral-like avenue accessible to walkers and cyclists. A slight detour along a palm-lined footpath takes visitors to the stone memorial built in 1921. Memorial gates were erected that year too at either end of the avenue. The dedication on the southern inner pier of the Ipswich Road Gates honours the women workers of the Stephens Shire. Until WWI, Queensland had few public memorials. The outpouring of grief at the loss of 60,000 Australian lives, buried in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, changed townscapes across the country. Recent work has seen the inclusion of memorials to later conflicts and the replacement of lost plaques by the trees, bearing soldiers' names.

McConnell Park and Toogoolawah War Memorial

Gunyah Street, Somerset Area,
Toogoolawah, Queensland 4313

Toogoolawah literally set in stone an eternal memorial to 'Our Boys Honour' when its citizens commissioned the first WWI memorial outside a cemetery back in 1916. The obelisk, crafted by Frank Williams and Co of Ipswich, was unveiled on 31 March 1917. It bears marble honour rolls and an engraved wreath with the words 'Our Boys Honour'. Until then, only Private Victor Denton's monument in his family plot at Nobby cemetery on the Darling Downs stood as a tribute to the European heroics of young Queenslanders. Originally set apart from the rest of the park by a picket fence, gardens were laid out by 1921 and a WWI gun was installed adjacent to the memorial on Anzac Day of that year. Memorials to subsequent conflicts have been added over the years. The park's land was donated to the community by Brisbane Valley pioneering pastoralist family, the McConnels. It's believed they also donated the nearby bandstand.

Toowoomba Railway Station, Memorial Honour Board

Russell Street, Toowoomba Area,
Toowoomba, Queensland 4350

Stroll to the northern end of the platform at heritage-listed Toowoomba Railway Station and you'll find a record that leaves no doubt about the impact WWI had on the locality's population. The Roll of Honour, 1914-1919, Queensland Railways Toowoomba Employees is a magnificently carved silky oak honour board with an impressive listing of 560 names in gold lettering on cedar panels. Railways Commissioner Charles Evans, a former Toowoomba railwayman himself, unveiled the tribute on 14 April 1918. Prime Minister Billy Hughes had stood on the platform in October 1916, urging enlistments. The honour board was artfully crafted at the North Ipswich railway workshops, now the Workshops Rail Museum. Detailing includes columns crowned with decorative motifs of the Queensland Railways emblem, scrolls and shells, and the Australian Coat of Arms. Toowoomba Railway Station, which opened in the 1870s, was still a bustling centre for trade and travellers. Today, the Westlander passes through, between Brisbane and Charleville twice a week.

Pimpama and Ormeau War Memorial

246 Creek Street, Gold Coast Area,
Pimpama, Queensland 4209

In church grounds at Pimpama, halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, stands a stone memorial-a soldier statue, his head bowed, hands crossed and resting on his rifle, a tree trunk supporting him. It is, in fact, a replica of the original which was unveiled in 1919 following a public subscription. The original stood in the cemetery of Pimpama Uniting (previously Methodist) Church, a tribute to the seven local men who had died in WWI. It was produced by AL Petrie and Son of Toowong, the largest masonry firm in Queensland at the time; responsible for many WWI memorials. A series of relocations within the property have occurred, the most recent in 1993, when the replica was commissioned. This facsimile, positioned facing the Pacific Highway, was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1995. The old digger, which was in poor condition, was relocated to Miles Historical Village.

Mowbray Park and East Brisbane War Memorial

33, 60 and 78 Lytton Road, Brisbane Area,
East Brisbane, Queensland 4169

A rare life-size statue of an Australian Light Horseman was unveiled while guns still fired. The monument was erected in riverside Mowbray Park in August 1917, and is the first of Brisbane's WWI memorials. Initiated by the East Brisbane Cadet Committee, it set out to honour the 520 early enlistments from Kangaroo Point and East Brisbane. Additional plates bearing more names were added during and after the war. Annerley monumental mason Alfred Batson carved the soldier statue from Helidon sandstone. The memorial is flanked by two cannons, reputedly part of Thursday Island's 19th century defences. To enable the expansion of the Bowling Club, the memorial was moved in 1974 to its present position to the east on the central path at the Lytton Road end of the 3.2 hectare park.

Booval War Memorial

Green Street, Ipswich Area,
Booval, Queensland 4304

One of Australia's best known sculptors, Daphne Mayo, is believed to have created the Booval WWI memorial while apprenticed to Ipswich monumental mason Frank Williams. The memorial, a slightly smaller than life-sized soldier standing on a plinth, was unveiled on 15 February 1919 by Governor Sir Hamilton Goold-Adams. The marble and granite memorial honours the 221 local men who served during WWI. A committee representing the Ipswich suburbs of Booval, Silkstone, Newtown and Raceview had raised £499 through entertainment and public subscriptions during the previous year. A voluntary 'working bee' had prepared the foundations. War had delayed Daphne Mayo from taking up a travelling scholarship and she bided her time learning the art of carving with Williams. The Booval statue is attributed to her because of timing and the strong resemblance it bears to a model she made. Its style echoes Williams'. Mayo's work includes the Brisbane City Hall tympanum and the Queensland Women's War Memorial in Brisbane's ANZAC Square. Plaques honouring 16 local men who died in WWII as well as tributes to later conflicts have since been added.

Oxley War Memorial

1218 Oxley Road, Brisbane Area,
Oxley, Queensland 4075

The soldier statue in Oxley is unmistakeably Australian, with his slouch hat and 'rising sun' hat badge, face slightly downturned as he stands facing west. This statue, created by Ipswich monumental mason Frank Williams from Ipswich, and unveiled in 1920, found its final resting place in the 1980s, moved to make way for roadworks from its original siting on the major Brisbane southside arterial, Ipswich Road. The soldier statue was a quaintly Queensland favourite style of WWI memorial, exhibiting common traits of the volunteer soldiers: youth, innocence, loyalty and courage among them. Oxley's monument bears a marble plaque specifically naming the district's 15 dead, among the 60,000 mostly young Australian men to be buried where they fell in Europe, the Middle East and northern Africa and a valuable record of local involvement. Frank Williams created many around southern Queensland, including in Esk and Boonah. He also produced the evocative Weeping Mother Memorial at Gatton. Small marble plaques commemorating involvement in subsequent international conflicts have been added. Oxley Memorial Park draws crowds for solemn remembrance on 25 April every year.

Emerald War Memorial

Egerton Street, Corner of Anakie Street , Central Highlands Area,
Emerald, Queensland 4720

An Ulam marble draped column stands in a traffic island opposite Emerald's old town hall as a permanent reminder of the local patriotism shown in WWI. War hero Major-General Sir Thomas (Bill) Glasgow unveiled the memorial in its original location opposite the railway station on 24 January 1925. The monument, designed by Brisbane's AL Petrie and Son, includes sculpted crossed rifles and wreaths of remembrance. In typical Aussie egalitarian style, Emerald's war memorial honours those who enlisted and participated, as well as those who died. Plaques around the centre list the names of 24 locals who died in the conflict. A later panel records WWII enlistments and deaths. Local monuments like this provide a unique insight into the involvement and impact WWI had on a community. Lists of names from a locality cannot be readily drawn from the National War Memorials archives. In recent years it has been relocated to a traffic island in Anakie Street opposite the town hall. A memorial wall dedicated to Vietnam Veterans is located behind the original memorial, and a modern War Memorial Fountain commemorates Australian servicemen and women who have served in all wars and conflicts.

Faulty Towers The Dining Experience - MICF 2015

19 Brunswick Street, Melbourne area,
Fitzroy, Victoria 3065

They're back - Basil, Sybil and Manuel return for their ninth consecutive MICF with 16 performances, appearing at the start of yet another globetrotting year. In theory the show stays the same - but because two-thirds of the show is improvised, no two shows ever are. You truly can expect the unexpected as these three infamous hoteliers serve a three-course meal along with their trademark Faulty service and a good dollop of mayhem. This internationally acclaimed tribute to the BBC's best-loved sitcom was born in Brisbane in 1997. Its return to MICF comes at the start of another tour of 20 countries. Highlights include a debut in Singapore at Raffles Hotel, three months in Canada that kick off at Toronto's Sony Centre, return seasons at Sydney Opera House and the UK's Royal Albert Hall, and a continuing London West End residency that ranks consistently high in Tripadvisor's Top London Performances. Eight teams of cast now tour the world - and Australia - non-stop. The cast for MICF 2015 features Karen Hamilton (Sybil), Anthony Sottile (Manuel), and Rob Langston (Basil). 'A great comedic night for the senses... amazing work' (Theatre People, MICF 2014) 'Laugh till you cry through two riotous hours of food, wine and impeccable comic timing' (The Great Aussie Bite at Sydney Opera House) 'Deliciously entertaining... not to be missed' (What's on London, London West End 2014)

Boston Marriage by David Mamet

Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Brisbane Area,
South Brisbane, Queensland 4101

The erudite Anna and Claire dwell together on the fringes of the Boston elite, but to keep themselves in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed, Anna has been accepting expensive presents from a wealthy married man who's become besotted by her. Claire, meanwhile, is ageing disgracefully and is set on seducing a much younger woman, and wants not only Anna's blessing but her help. Boston Marriage is a quick-fire comedy riddled with the wicked wit of the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer behind Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow, David Mamet. With sarcasm and ribald banter it chips away at the pretensions and proprieties of high society and blows apart class distinction, while exploring the compromise needed to keep a marriage alive. Boston Marriage is directed by Andrea Moor, who delighted audiences and critics alike and won a Matilda Award for 2013's Venus in Fur.
