65 km / 6 giorni / passeggiate brevi e in giornata Attraversate il cuore della zona naturale della Tasmania dichiarata Patrimonio dell'umanità lungo questo famoso percorso di 65 chilometri da Cradle Mountain al lago St Clair. Percorrete l'intero Overland Track in sei giorni o scegliete passeggiate brevi o di un giorno a partire dal Centro visitatori di Cradle Mountain e dal lago Dove. Non dimenticate che per effettuare l'intero percorso è necessaria una programmazione preventiva. Dovrete effettuare una prenotazione anticipata presso il Tasmania's Parks & Wildlife Service e portare con voi una tenda e un sacco a pelo pesante. Sul percorso troverete otto rudimentali capanni con stufa, ma non è garantito che ci sia posto. La stagione migliore per affrontare la camminata è da novembre ad aprile, quando il clima è più mite e le giornate sono più lunghe per via dell'ora legale. In aprile potrete ammirare i magnifici colori cangianti dei faggi. Questa camminata è impegnativa dal punto di vista fisico, ma vi consentirà di ritrovare un legame con la natura. Vedrete laghi, foreste e gole, montagne e brughiere, bellissime cascate e svettanti cime rocciose.

Hartz Mountains National Park

The Hartz Mountains at the southern end of the Huon Valley are part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area. A range of walking tracks lead through subalpine woodlands to ice-carved crags, lakes and alpine moorlands. On clear days there are superb views east to the sea and west into the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The Waratah Walk takes just a few minutes to reach a lookout with sweeping forest views. The Arve Falls Walk takes you through alpine fields and woodlands to the edge of a plateau overlooking waterfalls and the valley below. There are no camping facilities at the park but camping is allowed 500 metres from any road. Day facilities are basic, with a toilet, running water and a picnic shelter near the entrance to the Waratah Lookout track with an open fireplace, gas barbecue and tables. A range of commercial accommodation can be found in any of the towns in the Huon Valley, including Huonville, Geeveston and Southport. The weather can change suddenly at any time of year, so be prepared for cold conditions, even in summer.

Liffey Falls Reserve

Liffey Falls State Reserve is nestled in the cool temperate rainforest of the Great Western Tiers mountain range in Tasmania's north and is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Liffey Falls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Tasmania, along with Russell Falls in Mt Field National Park in Tasmania's south. The Liffey River rises on the northern edge of the Great Western Tiers and plunges through dense rainforest of myrtle, sassafras and leatherwood, running over several magnificent waterfalls before reaching rich farmlands and joining the South Esk River. There are four sets of falls along the 45-minute return walk from the picnic ground downhill to the majestic Victoria Falls (commonly referred to as Liffey Falls), all of which can be viewed from sturdy observation decks.

Part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, this national park protects Tasmania's great western rivers - the Franklin, Gordon, Jane and Denison - and the remote mountain ranges from where they rise. The Lyell Highway passes through the national park on its way to Queenstown. It's worth taking the time to stop and explore the rainforest bordering the road. Look out for signs to several excellent short walks. The Franklin River Nature Trail, 60 kilometres east of Queenstown has picnic tables, toilets and excellent walks through stunning rainforest to the Franklin and Surprise rivers, while further west, Donaghys Hill Lookout offers more stunning, panoramic wilderness views. And four kilometres west of Victoria Pass is the Nelson Falls Nature Trail, an easy boardwalk through ancient rainforest to a spectacular 30 metre waterfall. The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park is also accessible by boat. Daily cruises depart from Strahan to explore the densely forested banks of the lower Gordon River, downstream from where the Gordon and Franklin Rivers meet.

Tarraleah Golf Course

The Tarraleah Golf Course, is a nine-hole course in the Tasmanian highlands. The course is located at Tarraleah, a holiday village on the edge of the Tasmanian wilderness, a two-hour drive north-west of Hobart (122 kilometres). The Tarraleah Golf Course is Australia's highest, offering nine holes of mature fairways, first planted in the 1940s. Grazing wallabies keep the well watered greens trim and the drives are framed by mature eucalypt forest. Clubs and green fees are available from Adventure Tarraleah at the nearby Tarraleah Estate. Between rounds, you can take one of Tasmania's great short walks on the Estate - through temperate rainforest along an elevated tree walk to a waterfall and suspended viewing platform. You can enjoy breakfast and lunch at Teez café or visit the nearby Highlander Restaurant for great food, local wine and beers.
