You will be enthralled by the magnificent waves at Surfers Beach, just 15 minutes drive north of Exmouth. Although it is only recommended for the experienced surfer, spectators will also be fascinated by watching the surfers tackle the large waves at the reef break. Aptly named, Surfers Beach is the best spot on the North West Cape for surfing. Take a dip in the refreshing ocean at one of many protected beaches along the coastline including Bundegie Beach, which also marks the start of Ningaloo Reef. Snorkel the clear waters and be overwhelmed by the diversity of tropical fish in the coral gardens. Catch the evening meal from the jetty and then settle down for a family feast and enjoy the glorious sunset. Avid surfers can also try for the perfect wave at Gnaraloo and Red Bluff. Exmouth has countless ways of experiencing the world famous Ningaloo Reef and is the perfect base to explore this fascinating natural attraction. Exmouth is 14 hours drive north of Perth. Alternatively flights from Perth to nearby Learmonth Airport take two and a half hours.

Pristine Cape Range National Park near the town of Exmouth offers some amazing outback adventures from four wheel driving to gorge hiking and bush walking - and what's more it adjoins a stunning coastline where you can go swimming and snorkelling. The area is known for the striking contrast of turquoise waters and sandy beaches of Ningaloo Marine Park, and the rugged scenery of Cape Range. Hire a four wheel drive and explore some of the park's famous attractions including Shothole and Charles Knife canyons. A five kilometre bushwalking trail connects the two and offers some stunning outback scenery. Beneath the rocky plateaus is a network of hidden caves and tunnels that harbour unique cave-dwelling animals like wallabies. The rare black-footed rock wallaby thrives in the rock walls of Yardie Creek. You can take a boat tour along the creek for the best view. At Mangrove Bay a bird hide helps you get up close to sea birds and waders. Birds abound at Mandu Mandu Gorge, where there's also an excellent bush walking trail. Cape Range National Park is a half an hour drive from Exmouth. You can fly to Exmouth in around two and a half hours from Perth. Camping in Western Australia's natural areas is a special experience. Selected campgrounds from across the state are now bookable online for a trial period.

The Lighthouse Scenic Drive offers breathtaking views of the North West Cape as you drive up to Valmingh Head. Meander up the hill to see the grand Vlamingh Lighthouse for spectacular panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and Ningaloo Reef. Be sure to keep a look out for migrating whales during the migration season. Take the interactive tour of the 1912 lighthouse and learn about its interesting history. Continue to the edge of the lookout to see the site of World War II aircraft ruins. For a small cost you can hire binoculars to take full advantage of the magnificent views. Whilst in the area, ensure you make time to explore the magnificent marine life of the Ningaloo Reef. The Lighthouse Scenic Drive starts just outside of Exmouth, which is a 14 hour drive north of Perth. It is advisable to contact the Exmouth Tourist Bureau to confirm the drive is open prior to departure.

Spectacular beaches are plentiful in Coral Bay; however, aptly named Paradise Beach is a well kept secret worth exploring. Providing clear calm waters and gleaming white sand, the uncrowded protected beach offers an excellent opportunity to snorkel safely amongst the abundant marine life. You can choose to build sandcastles, play a game of beach cricket, swim in the refreshing waters or just laze on the beach with a great book. Paradise Beach is well located close to the Ningaloo Reef and tours to explore the impressive natural attraction are plentiful. Depending on the time of year you visit, a visit to this region wouldn’t be complete without seeing the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, swimming gracefully through the waters. Accommodation is available in nearby Coral Bay; however, due to its popularity with local and international guests, it is advisable to book in advance. Paradise Beach is a short drive from Coral Bay and 12 hours drive north of Perth.

Cape Cuvier Coast is a picturesque natural port close to the most westerly point of Australia. Driving along the spectacular rugged coastline you will be able to see the shipwreck of the bulk carrier Korean Star that ran aground following a cyclone in the area. From high up on the sixty metre cliff, in the winter months, you can see an incredible sight as whales and sharks pass by feeding on the schools of fish. Continue along the coastal road to see the remarkable blowholes that shoot water twenty metres up into the air. Be sure to visit Coral Bay where the reef comes into the shore and provides you with a rare opportunity to snorkel with whale sharks and manta rays. Cape Cuvier Coast is just ninety minutes from Carnarvon and a nine and a half hour drive north of Perth.

The Fascine is a picturesque bay in Carnarvon favoured by locals and popular with visitors. Take a gentle stroll along the boardwalk on the oceanfront to admire the coconut and cotton palms that line the path. Stop for a picnic on the grass and stay until sunset where you will witness a stunning Western Australian sunset. Take a swim in the ocean, build sandcastles on the pristine sandy beach or throw out a fishing line and try and catch the evening meal. With an interesting history and plenty of historical buildings, a walk around Olivia Terrace and the other back streets near The Fascine will introduce you to a variety of graceful heritage listed buildings. The Fascine is in Carnarvon, a ten hour drive north of Perth. Whilst in the area, be sure to visit the Carnarvon Heritage Precinct. Spend some time walking down the longest jetty in the state’s north and visit the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage Museum and the Railway Museum.

Shothole Canyon offers breathtaking views of Cape Range National Park near Exmouth. Take a scenic drive around the canyon and seize the opportunity to stop and examine the colourful layers of the canyon rock face. Join the walking trail at the bottom of the canyon to explore the national park and look out for some of the resident marsupials. In early spring you will see an abundance of wildflowers including many species that are unique to the area. Whilst in the park, take the scenic drive through Charles Knife Canyon further south of Shothole and stop at the various lookouts for spectacular views. Look out for some of the 700 caves that are scattered throughout Cape Range. Shothole Canyon is located 25 minutes drive from Exmouth and fourteen hours drive north of Perth. Flights from Perth to nearby Learmonth Airport depart daily and take just under two hours.

Located on Lake Macleod, the Dampier Salt Mines are an impressive sight from the road. Whilst not usually open to the general public tours can be organised through the Carnarvon Visitors Centre, if there are a sufficient number of people interested in viewing the operations. Learn about the salt mining process and how the 2,070 square kilometre salt lake was formed. Witness the salt being harvested and transported to Cape Cuvier for shipping. The mines are a one hour drive north of Carnarvon and 11 hours drive north of Perth. Carnarvon offers a plethora of activities to keep the whole family entertained and forms an excellent base to explore the region. If you enjoy seeing natural attractions, include a trip to the Bibbawarra Bore and the Blowholes which are both north of Carnarvon.

Rocky Pool is a freshwater pool near Carnarvon. This picturesque setting makes for a wonderful day trip. No matter what time of year you visit the pool, you will be able to swim in the inviting waters thanks to the year round warm climate. Take a walk around the Rocky Pool admiring the beautiful ghost gum trees, float in the tranquil waters and explore the shallow pools for fossils that have been washed down from the Kennedy Ranges.
