Great Barrier Reef Islands

Brisbane is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s natural wonders. The Reef stretches over 1200 miles along the coast of Queensland. Australia. This natural wonder is as big as Britain and Ireland combined, has more than 1,000 islands, from sandy cays to rainforest isles, and supports prolific marine life.

Visitors can take a day trip to one of those islands from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, flying by seaplane directly to the Reef itself. There’s plenty of time to snorkel or dive on the reef and visit with marine biologist and expert guides to learn more about The Reef. In one day you can see the reef from above and below!

If you’d prefer to take a little longer to experience the Reef then talk a few days and visit an eco-friendly resort on the Reef itself.  Heron Island is a true coral cay right on the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef. Ancient Rainforests

Australia’s rainforests are the remnants of vast forest that covered the continent when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Visitors to these natural places will see ancient trees like those from the distant past.

Just south of Brisbane, Lamington National park in the The Gondwana Rainforest is one the world’s best sub-tropical rainforests. World Heritage status was bestowed on Lamington in 1994 in recognition of its high biodiversity, and the fact it contains a living museum of the evolutionary steps taken in the development of Australia's modern day flora. It now includes 20,200 hectares of varying forest types, from temperate Antarctic Beech forest high on the border ranges through the sub-tropical rainforests, to the dry eucalypt forest of the northern escarpment. Lamington National Park provides food and shelter for a huge array of sub-tropical birdlife (over 160 species), reptiles, frogs, mammals and invertebrates.

Visitors can experience the rainforest in a variety of ways. There are over 120 miles of walking paths that lead to lookouts waterfalls and some of Queensland's most significant wilderness. Take a walk on the “wild side” yourself or join a guided walk.

Rainforest retreats, like “O’Reilly’s Guest House” revel in sharing the rainforest with guests. Located in the World Heritage listed Lamington National Park, O’Reilly’s is the perfect place to get close to nature, or to just relax and unwind and leave the stresses of the world behind.
