Sydney Architecture Walks

Sydney, New South Wales 2007

Sydney Architecture Walks explore ideas through architecture offering an interface between in-depth architectural knowledge and the wider design-conscious community. Each SAW route is driven by certain themes and ideas and attempts to decode Sydney whilst proposing new ways of thinking about and seeing the city. Trespassing joyfully across disciplines and genres, seek out the architecture and public art that materialises contemporary conditions and attitudes; projects that respond to the culture, history and environment of Sydney and not just imported formulaic codes. SAW is interested in the edgy and the beautiful, the provocative and the daring, the local, the foreign, the trashy and the raw, revelling in the vibrant network of ideas and human relationships that are every cities reason for being. Sydney Architecture Walks want you to get stung by architecture and begin to understand why buildings and cities are the way they are.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service

Martin Place, Sydney,
Sydney, New South Wales 2000

The ANZAC Day dawn service at The Cenotaph in Sydney's Martin Place begins at 4.30am. Thousands gather in the pre-dawn darkness to honour fallen soldiers. The dawn service includes a catafalque contingent, an Ode of Remembrance, Last Post bugle call, a minute's silence, a Reveille played on a bugle and the laying of wreaths. The Ode of Remembrance (below) is taken from a poem written by the English poet Laurence Binyon. It was first published in The Times (London) on 21 September 1914 and has been recited at commemorative services since 1919. "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them." The audience then responds: "We will remember them."
