So you want to travel to Oz and work for a year, what do you need to do? Read our check list to help you prepare for your ultimate adventure down under!

Working Holiday checklist

  1. Apply for a Working Holiday Visa
    To visit Australia, for whatever reason – a holiday, visiting friends & relatives or for a working holiday – you will need to sort out a visa. If you have made the exciting decision to travel and work in Oz for 12 months, you will need a Working Holiday Visa. This visa will enable you to work and live in Australia for up to 12 months.

  2. Apply for an Australian Tax File Number
    An Australian Tax File Number is the Australian system equivalent to the National Insurance Number in the UK. You will need an Australian Tax File Number (TFN) to work in Australia. Most employers will require you to provide them with this before you start work, so it is a good idea to get this sorted pronto. Visit for more information.   3. Set up an Australian bank account
    When working in Australia your wages will need to be paid into an Aussie bank account. This you can sort out when you arrive in Oz, you will need to take along your passport and some money to get started or some travel suppliers, for example STA, will help sort it out for you before you leave.

  4. Book your flight
    Decide which fantastic Aussie Gateway city you want to start your adventure in and get your flight booked. Search online and find a Travel agent here.

  5. Book your accommodation
    Upon arrival in Oz, it is probably a good idea to have pre-booked your first few nights accommodation, just until you find your feet. View different accommodation options here.

  6. Buy insurance
    You must buy travel insurance before you leave the country, fingers crossed you don’t need to use it. But it is good to be prepared just in case.

  7. Prepare your CV
    Make sure your CV is up-to-date, sells your skills and achievements to make it really stand out from the crowd. Think about what job experiences you would want to gain from Australia! Watch our videos to see what other people have been up to.

  8. Get an international Sim card
    It’s a good idea to stay in touch when you are away – even if it’s just to make people jealous about all the awesome experiences that you are having! An international Sim is a good way to get excellent value on Local and International calls.
