Chris Hemsworth's top experiences in the Kimberley

Chris Hemsworth's Kimberley experience is about getting off the grid and escaping to a spectacular, untouched coastal wilderness.

Chris Hemsworth recently spent time exploring the Kimberley as part of his trip around Australia and stayed along the Berkeley River on Australia’s remote north Kimberley coast. The closest town, Wyndham, is 150 kilometres (93 miles) away with no road in or out. The only access is by air and ocean, making getting to the Berkeley River half the adventure.

Get up close to the amazing array of wildlife on a safari drive of the bushlands, take a river cruise through the red ochre gorges, a helicopter flight to secluded swimming holes and fishing spots, or simply relax and take in your incredible surrounds.

"Sunset dinners in the Kimberley are an absolute must. The colours of the skyline there are as rich and vibrant as anywhere I've seen, and it is pretty special to see the millions of stars of the Australian outback night sky. We stayed at a beautiful place called Berkeley River Lodge, having dinner each night on a sand dune, barefoot in the desert sand was pretty cool." — Chris Hemsworth

If you're heading to the Kimberley, The Berkeley River Lodge is one of the most luxurious places to base yourself. The Berkeley River Lodge is on an exclusive, privately owned property so you will need to book a Scenic Air Transfer which depart from Kununurra or Darwin. The lodge sits anchored to a sand dune along the Berkeley River overlooking the Kimberley escarpment.

While staying at the lodge, there are a variety of activities on offer including barramundi fishing, river trips, dune and beach drives and helicopter sightseeing.

River cruises

The Berkeley River is incredibly scenic. Bordered by rock escarpments and filled with secret waterholes, the river is home to an array of wildlife like saltwater crocodiles, wallabies, and an abundance of birdlife. You can take full and half day cruises along the Berkeley River from the lodge.

If you take the full day cruise, you will have the opportunity to disembark and hike to the headwater, a walk that takes about 30 minutes, before jumping back on board and going to a secluded location for lunch. After lunch you will get to explore the Casuarina Falls on foot, or fish from the decks of the boat. The cruise will have you back at the lodge in time for dinner.

"We went fishing in one particular spot that could have rivalled Jurassic Park with crocodiles, snakes, buffalo and an abundance of other amazing native wildlife. Being in a place like that where very few people have been and feeling completely off the grid is a pretty special feeling." — Chris Hemsworth

The Berkeley River is a great spot for fishing in the Kimberley and the Berkeley River Lodge offers fishing tours in a variety of forms; heli-fishing, river and estuary fishing, beach, and boat fishing. Some of these fishing locations are so remote, they can only be reached by helicopter making this a unique experience – and one which not many have previously done. Given the diversity of habitats along the river bank, rock escarpments and bushland, you'll get to see an impressive array of wildlife both in the water and out. You'll be fishing for queen fish, threadfin salmon, mulloway and barramundi.

If you're interested in fishing the Kimberley, a must-do experience is a heli-tour. Having your own private helicopter available will put you in the heart of the Kimberley's best barramundi fishing. All heli-fishing is fully guided and rods supplied as well as tuition on casting.

Helicopter tours

"One of the best afternoons in the Kimberley was swimming in a secluded waterhole at the base of a waterfall. Another place where very few people have been. We helicoptered down along the winding Berkeley River and then boated across to this really private spot. It was amazing to spend the whole day there with the kids swimming and fishing. It's something I'll never forget." — Chris Hemsworth

One of the best ways to introduce yourself to the Kimberley region is by helicopter tour. If you want to see the best of the Kimberley in one fell swoop, take the Ultimate Kimberley Adventure tour. This tour will take you to some of the best rock galleries on the world. You will fly to the coast before heading inland across some true Kimberley country, including the King George Falls. Keep an eye out for turtles and crocodiles; you may even encounter an elusive dugong. Lastly, you will land by a picturesque waterhole for a late afternoon swim.

If you don't want a full-day tour, there are a variety of different options you can take:

Wetlands tour: If you're a bird lover, this one is for you. The Kimberley is renowned for its coastal wetlands which are home to an abundance of aquatic birds. Look out for the jabiru, sea eagles soaring overhead, heron, ibis, brolga and magpie geese.

Waterfall adventure: This tour takes you to Mitchell Falls, over the various landscapes of the Kimberley - grassy plains, dramatic rock formations and lush rainforest. You'll end the tour with a gourmet hamper by the waterfalls.
