Great Ocean Road Running Festival May 19 - 20

Be part of one of the best coastal runs Australia has to offer.

By Royden Lim

There aren’t many marathons out there that would lead you through some of the most spectacular environs in Australia. The course runs along the scenic coastal towns from Lorne to Apollo Bay, and runners of all distances can soak up some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches and breathtaking views as they run. Pavement pounding runners may even catch a glimpse of a snoozing koala on a gum tree, or a grazing kangaroo!

Held over two days in May, just as Autumn ends, runners will be greeted with nice, cooling breezes and temperatures ranging from 16.0 – 20.0°C – perfect for a run.  Apart from the usual half and full marathons, the running festival has a 60 kilometre Ultra marathon for runners who wish to push themselves to new limits.

Things to do

Set your distance

The Great Ocean Road Running Festival offers races for all. It consists of the 44 kilometre Great Ocean Road Marathon, 23 kilometre Half Marathon, 14 kilometre Paradise Run, 6 kilometre Run, 1.5 kilometre Kids’ Gallop, and the 60 kilometre Ultra Marathon to challenge yourself further. If you prefer to soak in the sights at a slower pace, you can choose to join the 5 or 10 kilometre Great Ocean Road Walk where you can enjoy the panoramic view at your own pace.

Join the festivities

The festival is not just a celebration of running, but of music, film and wellness as well. Hosted in the towns of Lorne and Apollo Bay and partnered with Power Living and the Lorne Sea Baths, the festival has arranged free yoga classes ranging from warm up, cool down, Vinyasa and Yin yoga sessions for registered runners. Salt therapy sessions are also available if you would like to enjoy the natural benefits of this ancient technique as you cool down.

Families with children will also be glad to hear that a kite festival will also take place during the festival, where children who have signed up for any of the runs can claim their free kite! Movies will also be screened across the weekend at Lorne Theatre, featuring a range of free running and new release family-friendly films.

Love live music? Give yourself to the rhythm when you attend the live performances and musical acts lined up just for you!

Discover Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road area is home to many other iconic landmarks in Australia that you might not have seen during the run. Visit Australia’s oldest working lighthouse, Cape Otway Lighthouse, located about 35 minutes’ drive from Apollo Bay. Take this opportunity to view the rugged splendour of the famous Twelve Apostles at the viewing platform in Apollo Bay. If you are driving, drive down to the magnificent Loch Ard Gorge. The striking colours of the gorge, coupled with its crashing waves, provides a feast for the eyes, and the perfect photo to frame.

Don't miss

Check out the action at Apollo Bay Hotel as local wait-staff race to carry a tray of beer from the hotel to the Great Ocean Road Brewhouse and back, trying their best to not spill a single drop! Be sure to be there to witness this unique challenge, and find out who will take home the trophy.
