Sleep in luxury at Halcyon House

Sun, surf and designer surrounds are on offer at the very cool Halcyon House.

By Sheriden Rhodes

If you crave a modern Australian beach experience, you'd be hard pressed to find better than the boutique hotel, Halcyon House. In the laid-back coastal village of Cabarita Beach (just over an hours drive south of Brisbane), this retreat fuses the original architecture of a 1960s Aussie beach motel with modern Australian design. Halcyon House was launched in 2015 to international acclaim, with Condé Nast Traveller's David Prior saying it represented "a new era of boutique properties in Australia". US travel magazine Travel + Leisure declared it one of the best new hotels on the planet in 2016. Rooms start at AUD$550 a night, including à la carte breakfast for two.

How to get there

Halcyon House is at Cabarita Beach, in northern New South Wales, about an 80 minute drive south of Brisbane. It's just 20 minutes south of the Gold Coast International Airport, or 40 minutes north of the hip surf town of Byron Bay. Luxury transfers, or car hire, can be arranged from any of these locations. You can also rent an Audi A1 from the hotel when you arrive.

Top things to do at Halcyon House

Soak up the designer ambience

It’s a designer stay from start to finish when you check in to Halcyon House, with its luxurious, distinctly low-key Australian feel. Interiors (created by eminent Brisbane designer Anna Spiro) feature a crisp palette of blue and white, along with a curated collection of antiques, including Australian seascapes, original art and rich wall fabrics in each of the 21 individually styled guest rooms. Fling open the doors to your balcony (from oceanfront rooms) and listen to the soothing sound of waves crashing along one of Australia's most beautiful stretches of coastline. A pillow menu, turndown service (expect quirky Australian treats such as Cherry Ripe chocolate bars left on your pillow), and complimentary mini bar are part of the Halcyon experience.

Enjoy top-class dining on the beachfront

At Paper Daisy, Halcyon House’s onsite restaurant, you can dine on the inspired creations of one of Australia’s most talented young chefs, Ben Devlin. Halcyon’s acclaimed regional restaurant features an open kitchen, comfy banquettes, Parisian chairs, and whimsical "wall of ladies" artwork. Standout dishes include paperbark-grilled cod with seaweed and pippies, salted fish with macadamia and native pepper, and ricotta agnolotti with cured tuna and chilli. This is regional Australian dining at its best.

Surf like a pro

Australian pro surfer Joel Parkinson is an eleven-time World Title event winner who calls the northern New South Wales coast home. Halcyon House guests can book in for a private lesson (dependent on Parkinson’s surf tour commitments), or join an exclusive surf retreat along Cabarita’s spectacular, uncrowded surf breaks.
