When you’re on a tight budget in a new city, it’s hard to know where the wise investments are. Here are some fun things to do in Perth on the cheap.
Let’s be real – travelling is about carefully managing your funds as though they were your secret beer supply at a house party. If you’re careful about what you spend along the way, you’ll be able to afford more unforgettable experiences.
To help you out, we’ve sniffed out some fun activities in Perth that’ll cost you no more than 10 bucks, so you can rest assured that your time in Western Australia won’t be blown on boredom.
Like to watch? Make tracks to the Art Gallery of WA
Open every day except Tuesday, you’ll find this good time on Roe Street. Check out their website to see what’s showing - there are often talks and events worth checking out too. Technically, there’s no entry fee, but a small-ish donation would make Mum proud ($3 is totally fine).
Want a night out? Hit The Odd Fellow
Head for the Norfolk Hotel’s The Odd Fellow in Fremantle for live music, a deli counter and ice-cold drinks. Live gigs start from a fiver. Now, that’s a budget.
Like it hot? Get some Mexican Kitchen in you
Head for the Mexican Kitchen in Fremantle to eat your fill of half-price tacos each and every Tuesday from 5.30pm. That’s three soft tacos for a bargain $9. This place has been serving up the goods probably since before you were born (1980, to be exact) and hits the Tex-Mex spot every time.
In search of happy hour? Head to La Cholita
La Cholita in Northbridge is your Monday night go-to whenever you’re in town. They run a ‘Gimme Five Mondays’ promo, which treats you to $5 house wines, beer and tequila shots. Yum. Or, if you’re after something a little more than a liquid dinner, try their $10 quesadillas.
Find Nemo at Mettams Pool
Make your way to Mettams Pool in North Beach - it’s a natural rock pool with calm waters protected by a reef and is perfect for snorkelling. No snorkel gear? Head to Kmart and treat yourself to a cheap face mask and snorkel.
Have a barbie on the beach
West Oz is known for its sexy blue-water-meets-white-sand beach situation. Everyone knows you can throw down a towel pretty much anywhere and not have to share elbow room with any other soul. But they’re not just spacious and pretty: most beaches are equipped with free public BBQ set ups. Use your $10 to pick up some sausages, sauce and bread, and BAM, you’ve got a delicious beach party. Cottesloe, City Beach, Scarborough and Trigg are your best bets.
$5 comedy night at Lazy Susan’s
Who doesn’t enjoy a good LOL? Head upstairs at the Brisbane Hotel to Lazy Susan’s Comedy Den, where you’ll find side-splitting comedy acts for only $5 entry. With three unique shows on every single week, you’re bound to find time to squeeze this into your schedule.
Wide Open Mic Night at Mojos
This red-hued institution has seen more bands than you have sunrises. It has everything from cheap beers, to pool tables, to leather-clad musicians from all over the world. Most of the events have some kind of cover charge, but Mondays are open mic nights, and you can get in for free. NOTE: this is NOT karaoke, so don’t knock back a shot and try to storm the stage.
