Top backpacker hostels in Oz

Coming to crash Down Under? Have we got some hostels for you.

From the weird and the wonderful to the postcard-perfect, here are some hostels that you can call your home away from home (thanks so much HostelWorld for all the tips!)

Best of all, at most of the hostels you’ll find a jobs board. So if you really like where you land, you can get paid for the privilege of hanging out! It’s also a great way to meet new BFFs and special someones.

Queensland

Base Magnetic Island – Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island – a quick 20-minute ferry ride from Queensland’s Townsville – is a tropical paradise. Think crazy clear waters, near white sands and bushland for days. Base Magnetic Island, right on the water, has a place for you to camp and sleep al fresco. Or if you’re after something a little more luxurious, there’s the female-only sanctuary dorm (complete with a pampering package). No matter what, if you’re there for a good time, be sure to go when it’s the Full Moon Party.

Scotty’s Mission Beach YHA – Mission Beach

Talk about pool goals here at Scotty’s Mission Beach. But wait, as they say on TV, there’s more: this place has a steam room, skydiving, treks through the rainforest, snorkelling, diving, kayaking, rafting … you get the picture.

Southern Cross Backpackers – Agnes Water

Order an Akubra hat on eBay and fulfil your country Australia fantasy at this 16 acre location of luscious land dotted with trees, hammocks and gardens. They even have a cute little lake on the premises and resort-esque swimming spots that tend to all your dipping needs. There’s also an onsite Karma Bar, free breakfast and a free shuttle service to town. Hot tip: check out the famous Scooter Roo Tour while you’re there.

Victoria

The Nunnery – Melbourne

What a building. The Nunnery is nestled in Melbourne’s Fitzroy and is one of the most beautiful hostels to be found yet. It’s all stained glass and Federation-era architecture, grand staircases and outdoor balconies from which you can watch the sun set. Talk about romance. You can run with a dorm or a private room or, if you’ve got a crew, go for the private guesthouse with its own kitchen (lux-u-ry). They do free breakfasts, pancake Sundays and a BBQ every Friday. Good luck leaving this one.

United Backpackers – Melbourne

Also to be found on the streets of Melbourne is United Backpackers. With a super cool underground bar that opens its door seven nights a week and is home to DJs and loads of events. It’s a place to put on your list. Be sure to drop by for Taco Tuesdays. Delish.

New South Wales

Nomads – Byron Bay

Feel like a spa day? Nomads is the place to go, with Jacuzzis (and hammocks) out on the BYOB courtyard. Yes, that’s bring-your-own-booze. Think of the savings (and the good times)!  An easy two minutes from the main beach, it’s not rocket science why this is a crowd favourite.

Bounce Sydney – Sydney

This place has earned a spot on the ‘Top 10 Large Hostels in the World’ list more than once. Looking over the city, the rooftop is the perfect place to sink a few cold ones and enjoy the BBQs put on by Bounce.

Byron Bay Beach Hostel - Byron Bay

Talk about fresh. This joint is pretty much brand new and has all the mod cons, plus an open courtyard with BBQs. A crazy-quick walk to the beach and you’ve found happiness. Across the road on Fletcher Street there is also an awesome little Japanese restaurant that serves super fresh, super cheat eats.

Western Australia

Fremantle Prison YHA - Fremantle

Not even joking – you can sleep in the slammer of Fremantle Prison. A converted jail cell to be exact. Or, if you’re feeling a bit more ritzy, opt for one of the Victorian-style guard’s cottages. Thirty minutes south of Perth, Fremantle is a great time – think epic bars, great food, and tons of action by way of live music. Read more about it here.

The Witch’s Hat - Perth

Click your heels together three times, because we’ve found a place that feels like home. If, that is, by home you mean fairy tale vibes and gothic feels. Plus, there’s free breakfast and WiFi.

Beaches of Broome - Broome

Hostel or budget resort? Well, the latter, obviously. What else would it be, with all that style and proximity to Cable Beach? Catering for everyone - couples, families, backpackers, groups, corporates, you name it - Beaches of Broome has so many room options. Even all-female dorms fly. Plus, they throw in a free daily continental breakfast buffet and free WiFi...
