The Explorer's Way bisects the Australian continent from Adelaide in the south to Darwin in the north. It covers over 3,000 kilometres and follows the corridor blazed in the 1860s by explorer John McDouall Stuart for the 'Overland Telegraph'. The township of Alice Springs is nestled among the MacDonnell Ranges. A detour to World Heritage-listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, five hours drive south west of Alice is a must. Following the Explorer's Way stop at historic outback pubs and quirky roadhouses. Marvel at the Karlu Karlu / Devils Marbles, where huge red spherical boulders balance precariously on one another. Another major stop is Tennant Creek, site of Australia's last gold rush in the 1920s and 30s. Mataranka has thermal springs and a fascinating pioneering history. Katherine, further up the road, is the gateway to the famous Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park and is where the Explorer's Way intersects with the Savannah Way tourism drive. Darwin is only 320 kilometres from Katherine, there are a number of detour routes. The Nature's Way tourism drive branches off at the historic gold mining town of Pine Creek to World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park and in the west Douglas-Daly and Litchfield National Park.

Nature's Way is a scenic tourism drive through Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks. For photographic, wildlife and birdwatching enthusiasts, this is a dream drive on a fully sealed road suitable for a two-wheel-drive vehicle. The 457 kilometre drive begins in Darwin and follows the Arnhem Highway through the Adelaide and Mary River wetlands to Kakadu National Park. It then follows the Kakadu Highway before intersecting the Stuart Highway down to Katherine and Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Kakadu is home to some of the world's oldest Aboriginal rock art galleries. It can be explored by car or on hundreds of kilometres of marked walking trails. Travellers can cruise the Yellow Water Billabong or the East Alligator River to see birds, animals and crocodiles. Further south is Katherine, the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park. Swim in the spring-fed crystal clear pool of the Katherine Hot Springs. At Nitmiluk National Park, board a cruise, canoe down the gorge and spot birds, crocodiles and other native flora and fauna. On your return to Darwin stop off for a swim at Leliyn / Edith Falls. Take a scenic walk at Butterfly Gorge Nature Park, north of the historic gold mining town of Pine Creek.

Injalak Arts and Crafts

The Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre provides a unique opportunity to view Aboriginal artistry of very high calibre. Gunbalanya, or Oenpelli as it is also known, is a small Aboriginal township close to the East Alligator River, which is the natural boundary of Kakadu National Park. Approximately 1,000 people live in the town and its outstations. Artists from this region are featured in every major collection of Aboriginal art in Australia, as well as a few collections overseas. There are traditional painters, bark painters, basket weavers and screen printers. Browse the centre, viewing unique Aboriginal art and crafts, all made locally. Travellers may also be able to see the artists at work, and watch local women weaving pandanus baskets. Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre is located on Aboriginal land within Arnhem Land. You must obtain a permit from the Northern Land Council before crossing the East Alligator River. Injalak may close at short notice for cultural and community reasons, please phone prior to your departure to ensure Injalak Arts and crafts is open.

Gunlom Plunge Pool

Jim Jim Falls

60 kilometres south of Jabiru, turn off the Kakadu Highway, Kakadu National Park, Kakadu Area,

Whether they are raging with water or reduced to a mere trickle, the majestic Jim Jim Falls are a sight to behold at the end of a challenging four-wheel drive track in the southern escarpment country of Kakadu National Park. Jim Jim Falls is an imposing 200 metre high waterfall. See it from the air during the tropical season when water roars over the drop and the road is impassable. Take the challenging drive in the dry when the falls are reduced to a trickle to get up close. Marvel at the contrast between the red ochre of the Arnhem Land escarpment and the white sandy beaches. It's worth the 900 metre walk across the rocks to take a dip in the crystal clear water of the plunge pool. Turn east off the Kakadu Highway 43 kilometres south of the Bowali Centre. Then travel a further 60 kilometres along the four-wheel drive tracks. Allow two hours one-way. Please note speed limits and drive safely, as the last 10 kilometres of track includes areas of soft sand. An entry fee of AUD25.00 per person over the age of 16 years is required to enter Kakadu National Park.

Jarrangbarnmi/Koolpin Gorge

Located in the southern part of Kakadu along the Gunlom Road, Jarrangbarnmi/Koolpin Gorge is known by some as 'The Jewel' in the crown of Kakadu National Park. It is a very pretty gorge with great views from the top by the waterhole. Take a dip in the plunge pool, stroll through the scenic bush surrounds or enjoy a picnic by the water's edge. The area is home to a variety of unique native wildlife, including many species of migratory birds. The Jarrangbarnmi/Koolpin Gorge walk is a 2 kilometre moderate grade unmarked track that will take you upstream to plunge pools and waterfalls. Rare species to the area include the rare Koolpin gum, the Kakadu dunnart small carnivorous marsupial the giant cave gecko and the rare hooded parrot nests in termite mounds. Access to Jarrangbarnmi/Koolpin Gorge is restricted, and you must have a permit, whether it's for a day trip or for overnight camping. A limit of 40 people are allowed to use the area at any one time and the area is open to both independent travellers and tour operators. An entry fee of AUD25.00 per person over the age of 16 years is required to enter Kakadu National Park.

Fishing competition at Shady Camp with around 100 competitors. Fishing will start at 6am on the Saturday of the round and finish at 6pm on Sunday night. Therefore fish need to be caught on the Saturday and the Sunday of the weekend, NOT FRIDAY NIGHT. Fish can be caught by casting or trolling lures, or by fly fishing. No bait fishing is allowed. No restriction on leader lengths or barbless hooks like other comps. If you choose, your hooks can have barbs and your leader can be as many pounds or as long as you like.

Save the Children Adventure Volunteering Kakadu gives you the opportunity to make a real difference and volunteer in an Aboriginal community. Trek through stunning landscapes in Kakadu and immerse yourself in the local culture. You'll also help create long-term change for children in Australia by raising much-needed funds before you go. Save the Children Adventure Volunteering Kakadu offers you the unique opportunity to volunteer at a local development program in an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory. While it's certainly powerful to donate money to a good cause, volunteering your time is even more life changing. The adventure also includes challenging yourself physically with a trek through Australia's iconic Kakadu National Park and canoeing along the Katherine River. The trip will conclude with a day at one of Save the Children's School Attendance Programs in Darwin where you'll have the opportunity to volunteer and meet the local children and families.

Have a flutter on the horses at a real bush race meet. Head to Pussycat Flats Racecourse at Pine Creek for the Pine Creek Cup, a five-race program that includes plenty of weekend entertainment. Place your bets in the sweepstakes and follow the action of local registered races on the course. Don your best outfit and enter the fashions on the field competition. The Cup is the first event on the country cup circuit, and the Pine Creek Cup is the feature race of the day. Plan to spend the weekend in Pine Creek - compete in the Pine Creek Races Ambrose Golf Challenge the day before the cup, pick a partner and go to the open-air dance on Saturday night, or enter the trivia quiz.

Aurora Kakadu Klash

The invitation only Aurora Kakadu Klash is the only fishing competition held in World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, which is rich with many species. Fishing takes place on the South Alligator River and is conducted on a catch, photograph and release basis. Specially designed measuring boards are provided to all vessels at the start of this three-day competition and each boat receives a disposable camera to record the larger fish caught. These photographs will be used as verification of all competition winners. The competition is only open to 35 boats, at the request of the traditional owners of Kakadu National Park.

Jabiru Mahbilil Festival

During daylight, it's a family event full of activities, workshops, rides, displays, Indigenous art and demonstrations of weaving, painting and more. Local showcasing includes the art and performance products from the Jabiru Youth Centre and Jabiru Area School. Food features with large earth ovens, buffalo, barramundi and the region speciality of magpie goose. Join the fun with competitions, including spear throwing, didjeridoo blowing and kite-making. At sunset the festival turns on a high art installation on the lake, followed by an evening program of screen arts, music and dance. Entertainment includes funky bands from Darwin and many Indigenous bands, such as West Arnhem Boss, The Bininj Band, Sunrize, David Dingala, Narbalek, Reggae Dave and Leah Flanagan. Dance such as Maori, Balinese, Congolese and modern ballet with a local flavour will be on show throughout the event. Screen arts and a spectacular fire show are some on the entertainment present.

Kakadu Bird Week

The inaugural Kakadu Bird Week will be held from 22 to 26 September with the programme designed to cater to both experienced and beginner bird-watchers. For the keenest bird spotters, there will be long treks in the sandstone country to search for white-throated grass wrens and other endemic birds. For the beginners, there will be small interactive groups helping to identify different bird species. Kakadu is a birdwatcher's paradise, with the majestic landscape providing a perfect backdrop for the rich bird life. Twitchers will be able to view woodland birds in the tropical savannah, water birds gracing the region's famed billabongs, and hear the sounds of richly voiced birds ringing across majestic sandstone escarpments. Visitors can take part in a range of tours, events and hands-on scientific monitoring surveys, including surveying in areas that are not normally accessible to the public.

Free Guided Ranger Walk in Kakadu

During the months of May through to October, join rangers to learn about the landscapes, wildlife, local history and culture of Kakadu National Park. Catch a free daily art site talk at Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock or join one of the guided walks which may be available throughout the Park. Mamukala Wetlands Walk is a journey of birds and wetlands, whilst Bardedjilidji Sandstone and River Walk is a sandstone excursion near the East Alligator River. At Gunlom, share in cultural stories about bush tucker, fish and fresh water crocodiles, and Murrill Billabong will uncover the secrets of Gunlom's network of creeks, billabongs and local history. You can pick up a 'What's On Guide' at the Bowali Visitor Centre for the schedule of walks, talks and slideshows. To enjoy these activities you must enter Kakadu National Park. An entry fee of AUD$25.00 per person for a 14-day pass is required.

In June, the Australian Chamber Choir celebrates the life of Gagudju elder and poet Bill 'Kakadu Man' Neidjie. His dreaming poetry is central to a program that journeys through Australia's multicultural landscape. Kakadu Man will premiere in Macedon and Melbourne prior to 16 performances across Germany, Denmark and Switzerland. Bill Neidjie (1920-2002) was responsible for opening his native territory to the general public, inviting Australians and international guests to enjoy the natural beauty of the Kakadu National Park with its sacred ancient rock art sites. Neidjie broke taboos by publishing some of his people's traditional stories in two books of poetry and with that, ensured that the history and philosophy of his people were not forgotten. With permission from the poet's family, the Australian Chamber Choir has commissioned Tom Henry to set extracts from Neidjie's poems to music. These poems speak of a place where the spiritual world meets the physical. Known for his inspirational and technically demanding programs, Director Douglas Lawrence has fashioned a superb collection of works that will resonate with Australian and European audiences alike.

The Twin Falls Gorge Boat Shuttle Service operates with a guide, from the gorge, which is a short walk from the car park. It operates every day of the week during the dry season and transfers you through the gorge to the marked walking track at the base of the falls.
