Jabiru, Northern Territory 0886

Follow the Manngarre (Marn-narr-ay) Walk through monsoon rainforest and along the East Alligator River in the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. The walk comprises three interconnected loops ranging from 600 metres to 1.5 kilometres in length. Follow the path through rainforest to an elevated viewing platform that overlooks the river. For more information about the surroundings, you can join the guided walk that departs from the information shelter at the boat ramp on the East Alligator River on Fridays. The Manngarre Walk is graded easy and takes about one hour for the longest loop. These walks may be closed due to weather conditions - ask if the walk is open at the Bowali Visitor Centre near Jabiru before setting out. The surrounding area has strong indigenous heritage. Aboriginal people set up camp here to because of the diverse foods available from the East Alligator River, the Nadab floodplain, the woodlands, and the surrounding stone country. The Manngarre Walk is located in the East Alligator region within Kakadu National Park, and is about a 3-hour drive from Darwin. An entry fee of AUD25.00 per person over the age of 16 years is required to enter Kakadu.

Gubara

via Nourlangie Rock Road, Kakadu National Park, Kakadu Area,
Jabiru, Northern Territory 0886

Gubara is a 6 kilometre return walk past sandstone cliffs to shady monsoon forest pool within Kakadu National Park and nearby the main hub of Cooinda. Travel 9 kilometres in on the first road to the right after the Nourlangie car park. The grade is moderate and you should allow four hours to complete the walk. It is a pleasant place to spend the heat of the day and you'll be delighted by the multitudes of butterflies surrounding the pools where you can enjoy a refreshing dip after your walk. During the tropical season these pools are connected by a series of smaller flowing cascades. Water monitors are known to have been seen in the area which have become accustomed to humans. Gubara is a good alternative to the busier Gunlom waterhole, and often the roads leading in are less affected by poor weather. An entry fee of AUD25.00 per person over the age of 16 years is required to enter Kakadu National Park.

Bardedjilidji Walk

via Oenpelli Road, Kakadu National Park, Kakadu Area,
Jabiru, Northern Territory 0886

Bardedjilidji Walk is one of Kakadu National Park's most interesting short walks. The 2.5 kilometre trail winds through layered sandstone, woodlands and wetlands alongside the East Alligator River. You can complete it by yourself or join the guided walk on Mondays. Bardedjilidji is the local Aboriginal word for walking track or pathway, and also refers to the roots of waterlilies growing in freshwater swamps and billabongs. Experience a number of different habitats on the trail, from sandstone formations that were islands in the sea in at the time of the dinosaurs, to monsoon vine forest and wetland areas. Look for the black wallaroo in the early morning among the shaded sandstone outcrops. Stop at the cave that provides daytime shelter for insects, geckos and bats, and which once would have been a cool shelter for Aboriginal people. Look carefully to see some rock art here, but please do not touch/rub the paintings. Enquire with the Bowali Visitor Centre about accessibility - the track is subject to weather conditions and guides' availability. Allow two hours for this easy to moderate walk, which starts at a small car park 500 metres from the upstream boat ramp on the East Alligator River.
