Eating fish and chips by the beach has come to represent all that is unique and wonderful about Australia. And there’s nothing better than enjoying freshly cooked battered fillets and golden chips, with a good helping of tartare sauce, straight off the paper-wrapping while gazing at the ocean. Here are some of the country’s finest.
The perfect catch
Just up the road from Bondi Beach you’ll find one of Sydney’s tastiest fish and chip shops, Fishmongers. Nab one of the tables out front or get your meal to go and enjoy a picnic on Bondi’s grassy foreshore overlooking the beach. Fish can be battered or grilled and comes with your choice of chips, rice, salad or tempura vegetables. If you’re really hungry, order a sharing box, which packs fish, calamari, prawns, freshly shucked oysters, chips and salad in one mouthwatering feast.
Sourcing its fish locally from Western Australia, Sweetlips prides itself on freshness, with all fish filleted on site. Pick your favourite – such as Cone Bay barramundi or Shark Bay whiting – then choose whether you want it grilled or panko crumbed. Add a serve of salt and pepper squid and natural oysters for the ultimate spread. With locations in Leederville, Fremantle and Scarborough, Sweetlips is never too far from the city to get your fix.
STAR OF GREECE, ADELAIDE
On South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula – a 40 minute drive south of Adelaide – lies the cliff-top restaurant, Star of Greece. With views over the turquoise waters of Gulf St Vincent, dine inside or out on its sun-soaked deck. The kiosk is open at weekends and offers King George whiting with chips and salt and pepper squid sourced from nearby Kangaroo Island. This is Australian beachside dining at its best.
TANK FISH & CHIPPERY, MELBOURNE
Using only Australian and New Zealand fish, Tank Fish & Chips has refined the classic dish, pairing it with colourful salads and herb-seasoned chips. You can have your fish grilled, but with arguably the crunchiest batter in Melbourne we’d recommend taking on the extra calories. Its old school fish’n’chips combines the catch of the day battered and served with chips, tartare sauce and lemon. Order a side of spiced calamari and juicy scallops. Find Tank at two convenient locations: the Emporium food hall on Lonsdale Street, and Lygon Street in Carlton.
FISH FRENZY, HOBART
Indulge in a humble serve of fish and chips from Fish Frenzy, on Hobart’s bustling waterfront. The restaurant, located on the Elizabeth Street Pier, overlooks the pretty marina and offers dine in or take away. Enjoy battered fish fillets – your choice of flake, flathead or blue-eye trevalla – and chips served in a cone. Don’t miss a helping of its famous smoky fish chowder.
THE FISHMONGER’S WIFE, BRISBANE
With countless accolades under its belt, this East Brisbane eatery has garnered a loyal following. Fresh fish includes Atlantic salmon, king snapper, barramundi or flake, which can be grilled, battered or crumbed. Choose from a range of tasty marinades – the Tahitian lime coconut cream snapper is a standout. The Fishmonger’s Wife also offers a gluten-free menu, which includes a house-made gluten-free batter.
PETER’S FISH MARKET, GOLD COAST
With some of the freshest seafood on the Gold Coast, locals have flocked to Peter’s for more than 15 years. Expect a queue, especially at weekends, but you’ll be rewarded with fish straight off the trawler. Battered, grilled or crumbed, there is plenty of Australian fish to choose from, as well as oysters, scallops, mussels and crispy chips.
JETTY & THE FISH, DARWIN
You can’t miss the cute red van of Jetty & The Fish. Famed among Darwin locals for its deliciously battered fish and chips, calamari and specialty fish tacos, you can find the food truck at the Nightcliff foreshore (Thursday, Saturday and Sunday) or Darwin Surf Life Saving Club (Friday). There are a few benches around Nightcliff jetty where you can sit and take in the stunning Darwin sunset.
