Top things to do in Hobart with kids
Give the family a good time in the Tasmanian capital of Hobart.
By Leah Dobihal
Hobart is the perfect introduction to Tasmania’s charming cities and outdoor adventure, especially for families. Exciting museums, cuddly wildlife and plenty of space to play make Hobart an incredible family holiday destination.
Here are some of the best kid-friendly activities in Hobart.
Ignite the love of art at MONA
Where: 655 Main Rd, Berriedale
Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) may have a reputation for its conceptual (and sometimes controversial) artworks, but in fact, most of MONA is perfectly kid-friendly. Staff will point out the rooms you may wish to skip with kids in tow. Before exploring the many entertaining exhibits on offer, be sure to arrive at MONA in style – on the back of a sheep sculpture on the MONA ROMA catamaran.
Find furry fun at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary
Where: 593 Briggs Rd, Brighton
At Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, kids can see wombats up close and even watch a Tassie devil his daily snack. But that’s not the only reason you should visit. Bonorong is the perfect place to start teaching kids about Australia’s precious animals and the land they live on. The sanctuary actively works to protect vulnerable wildlife and have a positive impact on the environment, and your visit will become a part of their legacy.
Have a sweet time at a fruit farm
Where: 634 Richmond Rd, Cambridge
Fields, pastures and berry patches ripe for picking – Coal River Farm is an idyllic day out for families. When the season is right (typically October to April), you can handpick some of Tasmania’s most succulent peaches, plums, strawberries and more. If you’ve missed harvest season, don’t worry, you can still see chocolate and cheese-makers at work, dine in the beautiful café and say hello to the resident farm animals.
Relax at a family-friendly vineyard
Where: 992 Richmond Rd, Richmond
Think a cellar door isn’t a family-friendly outing? Well, it is at Puddleduck Vineyard, just 20 minutes outside of Hobart. While the adults indulge in a wine tasting, the kids can admire the duck pond and enjoy the playground. You can even book the “Reverse BYO” to bring your own picnic along to enjoy on the grassy lawn.

Visit an interactive museum
Where: Multiple locations
If you have a train enthusiast on your hands, head to the Tasmanian Transport Museum. A range of full-scale locomotives, carriages and trams will have the whole family entertained. Nearby is the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. A trip here is never boring, with toddler and kid-friendly displays where your child can discover art and nature – and of course, touching the art is encouraged.
Take a hike at kunanyi/Mount Wellington
Where: kunanyi/Mount Wellington, Hobart
Offering panoramic views and plenty of fresh air, a hike at kunanyi/Mount Wellington is a Hobart must. There are several family-friendly walking paths to choose from, like the one-hour Organ Pipes Track. For a bit of a challenge, embark on the Myrtle Gully Track to uncover waterfalls and towering eucalypt trees.
