6 Superb Perth Hotels

From hipster hangouts to old-school elegance, Perth’s best hotels cover all the bases.

By Ute Junker

Perth's hotels include some of the best in the country, with styles ranging from luxurious heritage properties to stylish make-yourself-at-home havens. Whether you decide to base yourself downtown or prefer one of Perth's hip neighbourhoods, there are plenty of inviting hotels to choose from.

COMO THE TREASURY

Como The Treasury, Perth, Western Australia

It’s not just locals who think highly of Como The Treasury: not long after it opened, the hotel was named the second-best hotel in the world by the prestigious magazine, Conde Nast Traveler. Local firm Kerry Hill Architects were responsible for transforming three historic government offices into a lifestyle precinct that is also home to a clutch of the city’s best bars and restaurants. The Treasury has built its reputation on its superb service and its elegantly understated rooms, complete with opulent bathrooms, free mini-bar and Wi-Fi. Guests can also enjoy the sky-high lap pool and the sumptuous spa, as well as superb breakfasts at Post, overlooking the gorgeous Postal Hall, and dinner at the magnificent rooftop Wildflower restaurant.

CROWN TOWERS PERTH

Crown Towers, Perth, Western Australia

Although it lies 15 minutes drive from the centre of town, Crown Towers Perth is still in the heart of the action. The hotel is the newest and most luxurious addition to the Crown complex, a destination in its own right complete with a theatre, a casino and a mouth-watering selection of restaurants helmed by big-name chefs such as Nobu and Neil Perry. It’s clear from the moment you walk through the door that the developers were thinking big: the seven metre (23 foot) high ceilings and the spectacular chandeliers – weighing three tons – are proof of that. But it’s the little details that really impress, from the silky lining of the dressing gowns to the ultra-clear filtered ice cubes in the cocktails.

ALEX HOTEL

Alex Hotel, Perth, Western Australia

It’s not that we don’t like the rooms at Alex Hotel, the minimalist grey interiors jazzed up with splashes of yellow, it’s just that the hotel’s homey public spaces are so irresistibly welcoming. Pull up a seat at the long, sun-drenched breakfast table and help yourself to complimentary sourdough toast and freshly-baked muffins, or chill out in the lounge, where you can pop an album on the record player and relax on one of the velvet sofas. Alternatively, help yourself to a glass of local wine or beer from the honesty bar and head up to the roof terrace. Northbridge’s many bars and restaurants are within walking distance, but at the Alex, you may well find yourself staying in.

THE TERRACE HOTEL

The Terrace Hotel, Perth, Western Australia

Tucked into an eye-catching heritage building on St Georges Terrace, the Terrace Hotel offers its guests a slice of history along with plenty of creature comforts. Built in 1892 on one of the first land grants in the city, the building went through highs and lows, including a stint as a boarding house, before being reborn as one of Perth’s most exclusive hotels. Each of the 15 suites offers a clever combination of retro glamour – think wooden four-poster beds, Chinoiserie screens and custom-made chandeliers – and modern technology, as well as magnificent marble bathrooms. A leisurely alfresco breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant is the perfect way to start the day.

THE RICHARDSON HOTEL & SPA

The Richardson Hotel & Spa, Perth, Western Australia

The building itself, designed by British architect Sir Terry Farrell, might be strikingly contemporary but at The Richardson, the luxury is served up old-school style. Every room has a private balcony and a separate lounge area, as well as a king-size bed with a choice of six different pillows. Other highlights include the in-house French restaurant, Opus, and the tranquil spa. The Richardson’s other big advantage is its location in tranquil West Perth. From here, you can take a pre-breakfast jog through lovely Kings Park, stroll into the city centre, or walk to the many bars and restaurants of the hip Northbridge neighbourhood.

HOUGOUMONT HOTEL, FREMANTLE

Hougoumont Hotel, Fremantle, Western Australia

A trip to Fremantle, the port city 30 minutes out of town, is an essential part of any Perth visit, but if you want to explore this fascinating area properly, check in for a night or two at the Hougoumont Hotel. The hotel channels the typical Fremantle hipster-meets-heritage vibe, with a historic central building expanding into a series of stylish rooms built into shipping containers. The standard rooms are as snug as a ship’s cabin; couples may prefer one of the more spacious staterooms. The hotel’s welcoming vibe extends to free-of-charge coffee and fresh fruit in the mornings and a complimentary happy hour in the evenings, featuring local wines and cheese.
