Cairns War Memorial

The Esplanade, Cairns Area,
Cairns, Queensland 4870

Time now stands still but years ago, the Cairns' war memorial kept the far northern city's population punctual. The clock tower on which a soldier statue stands-unique in Queensland-was unveiled on ANZAC Day 1926, 15 months after the foundation stone was laid, at the intersection of Abbott and Shield streets. Costing £2,074, it was the most expensive of soldier statues and the third most costly WWI memorial in Queensland, satisfying not only a desire for a substantial memorial that grabbed public attention but also a long-felt need for a public clock. Marble honour rolls bear 142 locals' names from WWI, including two women. The memorial was relocated in 1972, to The Esplanade, fronting Trinity Bay, opposite the Cairns RSL. At that time, the clock faces were replaced by painted replicas, each set at 4.28, when the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli commenced on the morning of 25 April 1915. A 1940 field gun and an 1887 naval gun now flank the 10.27 metre high memorial.

The first "Gorgonian Gorge"; the second and third sisters rise to within one metre of the surface and the three metre gap between is utterly filled with schools of fusiliers and snapper. Swim-throughs, overhangs and crevices to explore, deep dives and pinnacles to swim around. A huge variety of pristine corals. Look for Barracuda, Reef sharks, Moray and Garden Eels, Lagoon Rays and Turtles.

Cairns, Queensland 4870

The Cairns Amateurs Racing Carnival is four days of fun, fashion, glamour, food and entertainment built around two days of horse racing in Cairns in early September each year. What began as a small meeting in 1959, designed to bring city and country together, has expanded over the years to become one of Australia's premier spring horse racing carnivals. Operated by the Far North Queensland Amateur Turf Club Inc., their event has become widely, and affectionately, known as "The Cairns Amateurs". 57 years on, the Cairns Amateurs is complemented by a host of social activities, some formal and some very informal including a number of Members-only and corporate functions as well as events and areas for the general public on both race days. The beautiful mild September climate entices large crowds of locals as well as interstate visitors.
