Unset Typologies

620-640 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne area,
Melbourne, Victoria 3000

Izabela Pluta has always been drawn to sites that invoke a longing for place, such as redundant urban landscapes and dilapidated or reused buildings – sites that appear to drift between an actual place and a past place. Framed by large-scale excavation and extensive new development, the CitiPower Substation is an example of an industrial landscape caught between past and future. The photomural banner depicts a transitional site, where light fittings, ceiling panels, vents and lights are suspended as a result of a building's transformation. A typical photomural of a landscape vista acts as a fixed point of focus beyond the suspended fittings. The medium of 'wallpaper' embodies a space through its association to a place; it alludes to the ephemeral quality of time and evokes the desire to be somewhere else. 'Unset Typlogies' explores how the nature of photomural wallpaper enables observers to hypothesise the existence of a past and glimpse the possibility of a future while inviting us to contemplate the relentless renewal of the CBD over time. Commissioned by the City of Melbourne Public Art Program. Izabela is represented by Dianne Tanzer Gallery + Projects, Melbourne and Galerie Pompom, Sydney. Photos: Carla Gottgens
