North West Tasmania’s farm and food experiences
Home to some of Earth's purest air and soil so red, it almost glows. Tasmania's North West is the place to feast.

Fringed by the wild Southern Ocean and one of the world’s largest temperate rainforests, North West Tasmania’s cool climate and pure air create prime conditions for delicious produce. Take home a neat souvenir at the country’s oldest operating whisky distillery, Hellyers Road. At The Truffle Farm, home to Australia’s first black truffle, join the hunt to unearth hidden treasures, followed by a generous truffle tasting. Black truffle tours run from June to September.

Adorable fairy penguins, shaggy highland cows and luxury accommodation that spills into the untamed wilderness. The Cove is an award-winning adults-only retreat set beside the sparkling Southern Ocean. After e-biking along the coastal pathway or touring the 170-year-old farm, top off your day with a fine dining feast at the on-site Basalt restaurant, with a menu driven by fresh local ingredients.

Food celebrations are a way of life in North West Tasmania. Head to Launceston, a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, for the Harvest Market. There’s one main rule here: every stallholder must grow, produce or make their own goods with Tasmanian ingredients. Further north, food celebrations take on a quirky approach at Permission to Trespass. Every July, the festival opens the gates to typically off-limits landscapes and eccentric food-and-drink experiences; think food festival meets wilderness gathering.
