Yes, this journey on board The Ghan is flexible, and you can travel in either direction through Australia. You can choose to travel northbound from Adelaide to Darwin, or go in reverse from Darwin back down to Adelaide. Both directions include the same iconic highlights, including off-train experiences in Alice Springs and Katherine.

Day 2: The outback
Today, your journey along the remote Oodnadatta Track begins. You’ll also have your choice of off-train experiences, from scenic flights to cultural walks. Back on the train, cross the Northern Territory border to arrive at Alice Springs.

One of the best things about the Ghan is its flexibility. Stay a couple of nights in Alice Springs to experience the array of incredible activities on offer. Simply hop on another Ghan train to continue the rest of your journey.
Day 3: Katherine to Darwin
On your last day, the train stops at the historic pioneering township of Katherine, where tropical adventures abound. Day three ends your time aboard The Ghan, with Darwin as your final stop.
