Guide to McLaren Vale
- Getting to McLaren Vale
- When to visit
McLaren Vale is home to some of the world’s oldest grape vines, and is the epicentre of the South Australian wine industry.
Situated between the rolling Mount Lofty Ranges and Gulf St Vincent beaches, McLaren Vale sits only 45 minutes from Adelaide. This South Australian gem boasts more than 80 cellar doors and vineyards, top-notch restaurants and beautiful accommodation options. But McLaren Vale isn’t just about the wine; beyond the vines are long stretches of beach, rugged coastline and local wildlife.
McLaren Vale is less than an hour drive from Adelaide. If you’d prefer not to drive, day tours are available from Adelaide, though you may need more than a day to take in all the region has to offer.
- Adelaide Airport (ADL) is about 40km (25mi) from McLaren Vale and services international and domestic arrivals
- Car hire is available from all airport terminals
Taxis are available, but it’s best to book in advance. Alternatively, hire a bicycle and ride between cellar doors.
McLaren Vale experiences hot, dry summers and cool winters, making it a destination you can visit all year round. A hat and sunscreen are recommended for sunny days no matter the season, and layers are a good idea during autumn and winter when evening temperatures can drop. Autumn is one of the best times to visit as it brings mild weather as well as grape harvesting (typically complete by the end of April).
- High season: Late summer and autumn (February to April)
- Low season: Winter (June to August)
