Guide to the Flinders Ranges
Aboriginal name: Ikara-Flinders Ranges
Explore a landscape more than 600 million years old.
The rugged, weathered peaks and rocky gorges of the Flinders Ranges in outback South Australia form some of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the country. It's a place rich in Aboriginal history and home to a vast array of wildlife. Following the scenic roads, 4WD tracks and walking trails that crisscross this wild countryside will take you on a remarkable adventure.
The sweeping landscape of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges is home to the Adnyamathanha people, sometimes referred to as Yura. Ikara, meaning meeting place, refers to Wilpena Pound – a breathtaking natural environment that continues to hold sacred significance to Adnyamathanha people today.
There are meaningful ways to experience the depth of Adnyamathanha culture through incredible tours and experiences across this rugged outback landscape.
The best way to get to The Flinders Ranges is by flying into Adelaide Airport (ADL) and continuing your journey by car.
Most of the park's top attractions are accessible with a 2WD car. If you're looking to access all tracks, consider hiring a 4WD vehicle. Or, book a guided tour departing from Adelaide.
The ideal time to visit Flinders Ranges is during the cooler months from April to October. The temperatures are mild and make for a comfortable bushwalking experience. Meanwhile, the summer months are no stranger to hot weather and, as a result, many of the longer walking trails are closed or have limited operating hours from December through February.
