Guide to the South Coast of New South Wales
Wild beaches, legendary road trips, fresh oysters, breaching whales and award-winning cheese — the South Coast is ready to be savoured at every turn.
The New South Wales South Coast is one of Australia’s greatest road tripping destinations. Stretching from Kiama in the north, all the way south to Eden on the Victorian border, this 400km (250mi) of coastline is bursting with fresh seafood and outdoor adventure. Unbeatable fresh oysters, beaches as white as can be and the opportunity to swim with seals and watch whales – the region promises adventure around every corner.
Accessing the north of the region is a breeze from Sydney. Travel south along the Princes Highway and in 2.5 hours you’ll reach the northern tip of the South Coast.
- Sydney Airport (SYD) is the most practical air gateway for the region, with many international and domestic flight options.
- Merimbula Airport (MIM) is in the southern reaches of the region and is serviced by direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne.
- Moruya Airport (MYA) near the centre of the region offers direct flights from Sydney.
The vast and varied stretches of the South Coast are best explored by car. Sydney, Merimbula and Moruya airports all have car hire available, however the latter is significantly smaller. Campervans and caravans are popular options here and are well catered for.
The South Coast is an all-season destination. In December and January, the warm weather welcomes families on their summer holidays – the beaches fill, the days are long and towns spring to life. Autumn is still warm with fewer crowds, while winter is perfect for hiking and exploring cellar doors. Spring is best for whale watching and wildflowers.
