9 brunch spots worth getting out of the city for

Sydney is full of hidden gems known only by the locals. Here is a list of 9 amazing brunch venues out of the city and tucked away from visitors’ eye.

Brunch has become a favourite past time for so many Sydney-siders to enjoy fun get-togethers with tasty food, great coffee in a lively atmosphere. Supporting this trend are the many amazing cafes spread throughout the city and I'm glad to be able to share a list of my favourites.

Ritual Coffee Traders

Ritual Coffee Traders, Northbridge, New South Wales

This cosy café is always busy full of locals and yet the service remains top-notch. The menu features mainly raw vegan options like chia pudding, quinoa and chia porridge, bircher muesli, and acai bowls. If you happen to be there at lunch time, try their famous nourish bowl or falafel bowl because they're quite filling. And if you're on the move, they have pre-packed takeaways ready to go.

The coffee is awesome so definitely order one. Sourced from Gabriel Coffee, the Monte Carlos house blend contains a note of chocolate, perfect for lattes and flat whites. It's on the north side of the harbour bridge but definitely worth crossing for.

John Smith Specialty Coffee

John Smith Specialty Coffee, Waterloo, New South Wales

John Smith Specialty Coffee is no common café like its name coyly suggests. The menu looks typical at first glance, however, every dish has been jazzed up one way or another. One example is their "pulled pork eggs benedict" which is to die for. The attentive staff serves up amazing coffee using their own blend. The beans are sourced from Kenya and Ethiopia, and roasted up exclusively by Fossix Coffee. The coffee is an exotic blend of floral and chocolate notes and packed with flavours.

Duck Duck Goose

Duck Duck Goose, Randwick, New South Wales

This café is a new addition to Randwick, offering a bright, kids-friendly space with bursts of colours against rustic exposed brick walls and reclaimed wood furniture. Eat-Drink-Play is their motto here and they certainly deliver. The all-day breakfast menu contains café staples with a healthy twist. The kids menu has each option being a three-course fare to keep your kids occupied while you’re catching up with friends. What's also great is their own batch-roasted coffee blend.

Edition Coffee Roasters

Edition Coffee Roaster, Darlinghurst, New South Wales

Situated on the corner of Liverpool and Bourke Street, Edition Coffee Roasters is a small cosy place with polished concrete floor and a clean all-white aesthetic. The menu here is small (just eight seasonal dishes), featuring Japanese inspired food in a minimalist Nordic setting. "Mushroom pond" is a highlight - it's udon noodles served with assorted mushrooms over a warm mushroom broth and topped with mushroom cream and herbs. As you would have guessed from its name, this place is all about its coffee. Roast from green beans, the coffee is perfect for batch-brew, cold-brew and Japanese drip.


Roastville, Marrickville, New South Wales

Roastville offers a wide variety of fresh, healthy and artfully presented dishes that will satisfy all taste buds. For example, the "dirty bird benedict" is a hefty serving of otherwise traditional eggs benny but with large pieces extra crunchy fried chicken fillets. The coffee is roasted on location and tastes fantastic. The beans are for sale so you can always take one or two bags home. Besides coffees, try their dairy-free smoothies made from the freshest of ingredients.


Dose, Willoughby, New South Wales

Dose is a little rustic space with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood furniture and no kitchen. Therefore, their selection of sandwiches, salads and various café staples are prepared off-premise and ready to serve. I especially love their breakfast dishes. Dose is another business venture of Sam Gabrielian, the owner of Gabriel Coffee so expect some exquisite tasting coffee. It’s quite busy with constant streams of people coming in and out but definitely worth battling the crowds for.

Back & Forth

Back & Forth, Castlecrag, New South Wales

Back & Forth is a great café. With a menu offering a variety of dishes, there is always something for everyone. The menu definitely leans towards a healthy and nutritious offering with plentiful of vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free and dairy free options. There’s also a few cheat options you can have once in a while. The perfectly decadent American double cheese-burger, served with succulent meat patties, Jack cheese relish and mayo is truly next level. Fantastic service, the staff really goes out of their way to make sure you’re satisfied.

The Preview

The Preview, Forestville, New South Wales

The Preview is a funky affair where you can find creative interpretations of traditional café staples. Slow cooked lamb served up in a bun with mint, peas and rocket known as the "Lambwich", is definitely a highlight. The usual avocado on toast is made even better with crunchy seeds and kale. The coffee is on par with the fantastic food, featuring the versatile Monte Carlo house blend sourced from Gabriel Coffee. With great food and coffee served by friendly and attentive staff, it’s definitely worth visiting.


Brewristas, Glebe, New South Wales

Brewristas is a great addition to the Glebe neighbourhood and Sydney café scene. The owner, Kevin Ly who used to be a mechanical engineer, utilises his engineering knowledge in making coffee. Made with perfect precision, Kevin’s filter coffee is definitely a standout. The food is both delicious and innovative serving brunch classics with a Korean twist. The avocado on toast is a highlight with an abundance of avocado and substantial chunks of goat cheese topped with a right amount of punchy salsa.
